automatic to standard

I have a "79" Spider with an automatic. The first question is. Would you Fiat fellows change the tranny out or just get a different car.
The second question is. If I do change the tranny, are there any other bellhousings and trannies that will fit.

you just need to get a 5 speed trans with matching drive shaft from another car, along with a clutch pedal. shouldnt be to hard.

This question has come up before. If my memory serves me well, the answer was: Unless you're really attached to the car, you're better off selling it and buying one with a 5-speed. You may get lucky and find someone that wants to trade. Some peoples knees or ankles give out and they have to switch or they just get tired of shifting.

the best solution is to find a parts car for all of the pieces you'll need. As for anything else fitting, you'd have to fabricate a bellhousing in order to fit a tranny other than the Fiat 5 spd.

what shape is the car in? i know someone who is desperately seeking a quality auto trans Spider.

His wife will not drive a manual trans, and he really wants a Spider. He has a quality X for himself.....

The car needs some bodywork, a fuel pump, paint job and some interior cleanup. As you can see I just started repairs and my wife decided she didn't want an automatic so I'm trying to decide what to do.

Not that i have any interest whatsoever in my friend's affairs, but it would seem to me that you're asking for an awful lot of headaches in this swap.

me thinks you'd be money ahead to find a decent manual tranny vehicle and sell the automatic outright.

if you decide to do so, i will gladly put my friend in touch with you.

have changed you auto to a 5sp.I'm looking to do the opposite.My car is an 83 in perfect shape so I would have to be assured that the trans is suitable to install init
