Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
Has anyone removed the inner fenders permanently. Mine seem to rub once in a while due to cutting springs too short.
The looks it gave the car is perfect with the wheels tucked in the fender wells. The car handles great and I have no other problems other than the inner plastic fender wells rub when I take a sharp corner. Also I have to be careful when I go over parking lot speed bumps. I don't want to trade the looks of the car for higher springs. Just those plastic inner fenders are annoying...

Re: Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
There are a lot of cars that don't even have them.

There is a hole in your fender behind the liner. If you take the liner off water will 100% get into the cabin on a rainy day. Also this has a lot to do with those speakers in or near the map pockets burning out.

There are more cars running around without the plastic liners than cars that do have them. There is not a hole behind them, there is however a sheet metal panel that is not totaly sealed to the fender. No danger in removing them, and no water will get into the cabin.

Re: Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
Like the guys said most of the spiders driving around now don't even have them. If you do decide to remove them just make sure you seal your speakers in the map pockets or they'll be toast.
If you decide to sell them let me know.

Thanks for your responses...... I will remove them and make sure I seal the panel or hole behind the inner fender.

What sheet metal are you talking about? Nothing but air between the back side of my speakers and the plastic fender liners.

Re: Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
I'll take some pictures tonight. I parted out an 81 FI about 2 years ago and I'm pretty sure it had the sheet metal piece and no plastic inner fender liners.
The panel can be easily removed as the one fixed side is only held on with seam sealer. The outer edge contours to the shape of the fender and has a compressible rubber seal.

I'd like to see it too. I wonder if it is possible to get the rubber for it. I would like to make some.
Re: Has anyone removed the inner fenders.......
I had an 81 once and there is a full opening from the frame to the top of the fender, all the way back to the door hinges. The top of the wheel well was also open, allowing the box frame support to attach to the top of the door support. Very open area on the FI Spiders.

1979 and later cars (which were originally equiped with plastic inner fenders) do not have the sealing pannels/ extensions of the inner fender, to close off the speaker area/ kick pannel.
