Colour of timing belt covers

Post by Tango »

My '81 timing belt cover is pretty grubby looking. So is the rest of the engine, but you have to start somewhere. While it is off, in addition to painting the cooling fan before I remount it, I want to paint the timing cover as well. It is plastic, the top half is silver-ish, the bottom half is grey.

Is there "right" colour for these? I read a lot about the plastic ones being yellow...

Thanks,
Tim

Tim, I have the same question. Both covers in the engines I have are that grayish color... but I have seen them here in yellow.

My '79 has its original timing belt cover. It is plastic and it is yellow, ehh, minus the oil stains.

Mine is a 77, and it is yellow beneath the grime and oil layer.

Mine is a 76 and the cover was metal in stock metal grey. I painted the thing red since it was a pain to clean the stains out.

I have a grey one I purchased off of ebay for my spare 79 2000 motor and it would not fit. So, I think their is a slight difference.

Tango,
Before you paint the cover it would be a perfect opportunity to slice the cover in half so the top half can be removed to set the timing without removing the coolant T.

I did mine and it works great. Check out the post by user digitech on the second page of this post. Brilliant idea!

Hi Rick,
does that cover vibrate now that's it's cut in two. I would think it would rub itself making a vibration noise.

I painted the plastic cover on my 82 gloss black using the 'fusion' paint 2 years ago.Looks much better and holding up well.

Hey Tim, be careful on what you use on the cooling fan. Twenty years ago I remodeled an Opel Kadett C Coupe and I used some cleaner on the fan. One day I stepped on the gas and two wings came of and left a mess under the hood. It destroyed the radiator, the wires for the fuel injection and the hood. So, make sure to use the right paint on it and be careful with thinner!

Very nice engine bay Craig. How did you get the air boot to look so good?
