Seat replace or fix

Post by rmalicki »

The driver and passenger seat are leaning to the inside of the car almost like the inner rail in the backrest is bent. This is getting annoying and starts to tweak my back after an hour of driving plus i feel like i look like one of those thugs that leans to the center of the car while driving. Not really my look...lol. Does anyone know how to fix this or do i need to get new seat or have them repaired. I'm not really interested in putting different seats in as i love the style of these too much. Thanks in advance for the help Ryan.

Do a search, that can be fixed. There is an internal metal support that breaks and only needs to be welded back in place.

The seats warp like that from trying to put the top up while seated in the drivers seat. The later (79-85) seats are more prone to warp than the earlier seats (68-78). The whole seat back frame warps and twists, and usually the sheet metal tears at some point. For the later seats the metal is thin and difficult to weld without burning through. It's not that easy of a fix if it can be corrected at all. Most people try to twist it back into shape and add additional bracing or metal, but most of the time a slight twist is still there.

Find someone parting out a car and ask for only the top half of the seat if its good.

Here's what I did with mine. You'll want to straighten the seat back to normal by bending it back and weld all the seams. Add reinforcement and you should be good to go.
