The times they are a changin'

Post by rlux4 »

Time was, back in the day, you could go into any auto parts store and get about any kind of gasket material you needed. I'm helping my future son in law work on his 240SX and we needed some paper gasket material. Yesterday I went to two stores, both are national chain stores. Both of them had only one kind of material, which is too thick for our purpose. What's with that? Doesn't anyone need to make gaskets anymore? I'll be trying NAPA today, I hope they have it.
Technologically, we live in a great age. Mechanically, it sucks.

i do not agree. technologically, things should work tomorrow the same way they yesterday. we've technicologically not figured out (in a 30 year old p.c. industry) how to prevent hackers and intruders, mischievious or malicious, from causing undue hardship in our lives... and at the same time, have allowed ourselves to be day-by-day increasingly dependant on these fallible pieces of electronic goo.

i'd take the challenge of finding regular gasket material any day over the challenge of YET ANOTHER virus in my p.c.

napa looks like they got whatcha want on-line. best o luck finding it in your store today....

make them order it! they can have it tomorrow if they wanna please you. i find that with napa, service is store depenant.... depending on what parts they WANNA stock, they will please you or push you away.

Thats too funny Ron, I just went to Autozone this morning early and picked up both, the thin and the thicker gasket material. The manufacturer listed is Fel-Pro, so its good stuff.

The chain stores seem alot weaker in less common or specialty items. Their inventories are controlled by someone in the corperate office thousands of miles away, (ever wonder why they sell de-icer and snow melt where it doesn't snow or freeze)? They can also be more limited as far as where they can get parts from.

I'll agree that chain stores have ruined EVERY aspect of the auto parts business.

That's just not right, Pope. Autozone was one of the places I went.
Out here, if you want a chrome goodie, they have it. Actual auto parts though.... fuhgeddaboudit.

Mike, I'm not dis-agreeing with you but I have ALWAYS had my speculations that the ones protecting us from viruses are really the ones introducing the viruses. Also, I think that computers should be free. I mean, you have to lay out all this cash to have a computer and as soon as you hook em up to the internet, they are no longer yours. Some other kook is using it to sell viagra or what-not! Not to mention that someone for whatever reason is tracking your movements to sell you crap. It just gets more disgusting from there. In my opinion anyway.

Oh, by the way, the Autozone by my house carries it in both paper and cork. And, I find that one of those single paper hole punchers from the dollar store works awesome for making bolt holes in the gasket material.
