American Racing Wheels Lugnut and Stud question

Post by GP69124SPORT »

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for information on a vendor source for studs, and lugnuts (or Lugstuds) for these old American Racing Wheels. I tried to find someone on the net and couldn't really find anything. If anyone can point me in the direction of a vendor that sells what I need to put them on my '69 124 Spider, I would really appreciate it! Thanks, -Dave

PS. I need one center cap too, if anyone just happens to have one.

while we're talking center caps:
For my Konig wheels, I'd like to find a set of center caps that'll fit the 2-1/2" bore on the wheel, and allow me to put an Abarth disc / emblem on 'em.

Mark? Got any source for something like that?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

I can get the center caps in 2 1/2". They have two different styles, both chrome plastic with a flat surface for emblems. Here is the link to the cap page from my supplier. Just pick the design and size you need and let me know.

Forgot to measure the caps last night. I popped one out, and forgot to put in in my truck, I'll make sure to do it today. Thank for checking on them. -Dave

Hey Mark,

I measured the caps, and the bore is just slightly over 2 1/2", so a 2 1/2" cap would work. However, the cap is a push through, so I don't think a snap in cap like the 1315 from your supplier will work. There's no grove in the bore for the snap to grip on, and lock into. The American Racing Wheel cap is also 2 1/4" tall. If I can't find one, I may have to make a mold, and cast one out of resin, which in that case, i'll just make 4 new ones if I don't find a set of caps that will work. I'm in no rush, since I have a ton of other stuff to do before worrying about restoring the wheels. By the time I'm done, I would probably have been better off just to buy a nice new set of your Rota wheels...

I do still need the studs and lugs if you have them in stock. I'm sure you're aware that the lugs for the American Racing Wheels are long shank, and do not have a conical seat. They have a flat seat. Can you please let me know if you have them in stock, and how to go about ordering them from you? Thanks, -Dave

measure the length of the stud you need. I have the shouldered nuts in stock.
As for push-through caps, my supplier does carry them on a separate page from the snap in caps.

This is where I'm going to need a little guidance to figure out what stud I'll need to tell you to order. I figured the studs only came in one length for the fiats, this is because I have an old after market stud from one of the other Spiders that was threaded into the rotor using allen head wrench. The wheels I have didn't come off that car. It just happen to have a couple studs in it, so someone must have had custom wheels on it at one time. I'll have to put the stud back in, and put the wheel on the car to see how it fits. They might be the right size, which would be great, because I could tell you exactly what length they are.

Just so I know what to look for, should the stud come flush with the top of the hole in the wheel? And I'm assuming I would not use the factory spacer plate that's on the rotor now, unless the wheel rubs the caliper. What exactly is the purpose of that spacer anyway?

As far as the push through caps, I did look on your suppliers website, and the smallest wheel bore size I saw for the push throughs was 2.675, which is too large. I measured mine at 2.530. Plus the suppliers cap is 3.250 tall. Which even if it did fit the bore, I don't think would look good at all. The caps that are on the wheels now are 2.250 tall. I can keep looking around for the caps. I'll eventually find some, or like I said, I can cast a mold and make them myself. I make silicone molds and cast resin parts for things all the time. Just buying a set of caps is a lot easier. I probably lost the cap in all the muck I was walking in when I picked the wheels.... Desert rain storms are NOT the perfect weather to be buying cars and parts in.

I appreciate you taking the time to check on the caps :)

I have those same wheels. The bolts need to be longer than the standard fiat wheel lug bolts. I can check when I get home what I have.

you're right about the studs only coming in one length for the Fiats. There isn't much demand for 12x1.25 studs so there aren't options. If you're not sure about the length, measure the thickness of your wheel.

Hi Mark,

The studs I have measure about 1.750 in length. I've included a couple pics with the American Racing wheel on the car, with and without the spacer.

This is without the spacer.

More than likely the studs will work with the lug nuts you can get. If I need to use the spacers, I have them. Also, I'm assuming I'll need flat lugnut washers as well? If I do, please add those to the order too.

I also took a better look at the wheel bore, and noticed that there's a "shelf", that maybe the part number 1315 snap in center caps might be able to grip onto. It's worth a try. If I can't use them, I'll just hang on to them for a future project.

Here's s a pic of the bore area from the front of the wheel:

If you have everything I need, please let me know how I need to place the order (by phone, by email, etc.), and I'll order everything from you tomorrow. Thanks, -Dave

I'll measure the studs in the morning, but I believe that's the length. I have the studs, nuts and washers in stock. I'll contact you tomorrow with costs. I have caps in stock too, but I'll have to make sure they're the size you need

The 1315 snap in center caps that Mark Allison http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/ can get fit perfectly if anyone else has these same wheels, and needs caps.
