Ford Trucks?

Post by Gunsmith »

Well it's that time again, I need another pick up truck. I have had over 20 GM trucks that where great and only two Fords one of which was an absolute lemon :x But that one was new in 95. Now that I am looking for another I am torn. Normally I would say GM here I come get one ready for me but in light of Government Motors already stealing my money for themselves thanks to Uncle Sam I mad about the thought of giving them yet more money. So the question is do any of you have close hand experience with the new Ford F150's 2008 and up? Gas mileage, ride, quality etc. The sole reason I am looking at Ford is because they didn't take any money but I am sure there is much more to that story that I don't know. I already have a couple of 4X4 vehicles so the new truck will just be a 2 wheel drive extended cab model. So let the opinions and or facts fly. :D

Ive had five ford frucks and loved them. I now own an 03 silverado bought new, has 190,000 miles. been a good truck. Next ones gonna be another Ford. I dont think you loose either way. And who took money, and who didnt, dosent change the truck. There was a point in my life not to long ago that I was taking money from everyone just to survive, dont think I should be condemed for it.

How about the Dodge RAM 1500? Dodge revamped the interior on the new model; world of difference. I believe the 1500's have the coil suspension in the rear that makes for a better ride.

If you are trying to chose between the GM and Ford trucks, my preference is the Ford. Way better interior and overall looks, in my opinion.

+1 My Dad is into his second RAM and he treats that truck like a work horse, no problems so far.

But I would go with an F150... Ford did a great job updating the interiors in that truck.

CNN Money published Consumer Reports 10 Best Cars. Take a look at the truck listed. :)

Jeff... F-150 if your going to use it for daily town driving with the occasional heavy tow or haul.
I have a expedition, based on 150 frame, and after having GM for many years, the exp. has stood up to 480,000 kms of logging roads and long distance commutes to the bush. If I was still in the buisness and needed another truck I'd get one in a heartbeat.
A friend flew from here to San Antonoio TX. to buy a Tundra from a dealer there(saved about $20,000) and drove it home towing a 32 foot para-sail boat he bought in Houston, he loves it,smooth and powerful but yet if you behave, great on fuel economy. Another at the fire hall loves his Tundra as well.
Another has the 08 150 and loves it,again if you behave with the go pedal,he says around 24miles imp. gal on the hwy.
Industry around here seem to prefer the F-350's then GM and very few Dodge.. the tranny's don't hold up but the cummins is a great engine they say, many have had to replace the tranny several times and not just the rams but Dakotas as well.

Wonder how many post were gonna get on this one

while the Fords may look pretty and have an interior that has been improved (what does that say about the last interiors?), I think their motors are crap. Boy, that have lots of trouble and require gobs of special tools for working on them.
(As a joke, that I'm sure will be completely misinterpreted)I'd suggest you buy a Toyota truck if you want to get there quickly

Mark has a point about the engine. I had a plug let go and was an expensive fix. A customer had several plugs go and got fed up and bought a diesel F-350. They are not without their issues, but I've had my share of GM product and they had issues as well.
I'm seeing more Tundras about these days, now you mention it, but pricey(here anyway)

I would move up to an F250 and get the diesel. Plenty of towing capacity and you can't beat the diesel for fuel economy and torque. We love our F350 and I'm a GM man myself.
Another plus is the 6 speed automatic tranny. It is a fantastic transmission with few problems. One thing I like about it is when towing a trailer, it downshifts and keeps the truck from gaining speed on mountain highways so I don't have to continually use my brakes.

I dont know, had a 99 expedition, so far 100,000 miles and runs well. Wish I still had it. The new dodge 4 door max cab is impressive, huge. The tranny thing makes sense, this knuckle head I work with bought the 4x4 4 door heavy duty truck and took it to pismo. When he got there he aired it down and the tranny got stuck in nutruel. Couldnt happen to a better guy, had to get it and his toy hauler towed back to L A> . It has a nice cab though,

I have loaned plenty of money to people when they needed it for unforseen issues but I don't think the GM or Chrysler bailout is the same thing in anyway.

Well in the house here is what we have for vehicles already,

3/4 Suburban 4X4
Jeep Liberty
Jeep Liberty
and of course 82 Fiat
1990 Range Rover trail rigged

So I don't really need another heavy duty truck or 4X4 since those are already covered. I will really just be using it to drive 120 miles round trip each day the range is open and some lite hauling around the range.

I have owned all of the big 3 at one time or another.I have a 03 F-150 w/ 170,00 miles on it .Never been in the shop, although I did replace 2 coil packs. It has been a great truck, and gets used constantly, including lots of towing. The Chevy is just as good a ruck, although I hate the newer bodies. The Dodge...make sure you have a good tranny guy,and the ride isnt even close to the other 2.
I am with Gunsmith,I wouldnt consider a GM because of the bailout b.s.

Gunsmith, sounds like the GM truck is out of the running. Now it's between the Ford 150 and the FIAT 1500... Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

I think you should drive the RAM 1500 as the ride is way improved from the leaf spring version. As far as the tranny goes, my borther-in-law has the 2500 with the Cummins turbo diesel. I am not aware of any issues with it.
