Best Spider Challenge
Winning car for the Best Spider Challenge
I rec'd a note from Jerry Lee Phillips tonight; the winning car to represent So Cal is a 1969 mustard yellow (some call it orange, but an original color) Spider. I believe it's pic #11 on my link in the previous post. Very nice car and original
Eladio,
Thanks, technically the car still is my dad's car (it is still registered in his name). Though he basically gave it to me over 20 years ago I still consider it his. I am honored that our 124 Spider will be representing all of the Fiat enthusiasts in Southern California. I plan to bring my dad to the ItalianCarFest with me. Hopefully some of the others from here will go too.
I was 7 years old when my parents purchased the car and I still remember sitting in it in the showroom and riding home in it with my sister and I in the back seat. It broke down on the way home (the radio was miss wired and the car wouldn't shut-off at the gas station). 'Those Were the Days My Friend' was playing on the radio and my sister kicked the back of the seat and told my dad she hated his new car. This Fiat represents much more than just a car to me. It brings with it a lifetime of memories spent with my dad. I learned to work on cars with it and it was the first car I drove. More than anything else, I remember the long evenings with my very patient dad holding a flashlight helping me do some sort of tinkering on it. At least once a month my dad would wax it with Classic Paste Car Wax. Eventually we replaced the original 1438 with an engine from a wrecked 131 that was warmed over by PBS Engineering. I could go on and on with the memories.
A few years ago I decided to get the car going again so that I could do the same with my sons. Somehow I heard of Steve Walker and his enthusiasm for these cars. He told me of the France and Italy Show. There I met Ray and his son Chris. Over the years I've become friends with you, Alvon, George, Merkel, Jeff Schifferman, Pete Angel and now Jerry and the folks at Italian Car Club of the Southwest. To me meeting all of you and working on the car with my sons it what this is all about.
Anyway, enough of the long windedness. You guys bug me because I never post anything so now I've done enough for a few months. Thanks again to everyone!
Gary

Congrats Gary, you will make us all proud in Texas. I remember seeing your car at Merkels house during one of his car nights, about three ago. During the time I've known you, you've always kept the spider to a high standard, I'm sure your dad is very proud. Were going to plan some runs, coming up in the near future. You definitely have to take the spider out for a spin.
See you soon,
George

Final round: ItalianCarFest's show-by-the-lake Sept 22, '07
Hi, Mark-
The final round of competition will be on ItalianCarFest Weekend in Grapevine, Texas (Dallas area).
The website is a italiancarfest.com
What follows is our prepared text about the BSC (with changes to account for the choice of Gary's car). We encourage enthusiasts to distribute this information when and where possible.
The Italian Car Club of the Southwest has invited 4 premier North American Fiat clubs to participate in an exciting competition called the 'Best Spider Challenge'. From the pool of cars produced between 1967 and 1985 ½ as the Fiat 124/Fiat Spider 2000/Pininfarina Spider Azzura the challenge is to find which one of the surviving cars is the best.
To find that car, each of these great clubs- FIAT America, Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest, Fiat-Lancia Unlimited and Fiats of So. Cal.- has graciously accepted the challenge. FSC selected their contender at the Best of France & Italy in Los Angeles. FLU will pick their contender at Fiat Freak Out in Detroit in July. FA and FEN will each host separate events in mid-'07 to pick their contenders (locations TBD).
Those 4 cars will come to ItalianCarFest Weekend Sept. 21-23, 2007 to compete for the title ‘North American Champion’.
Each of the 4 contenders will receive:
· 2 ICF reception tickets
· A room Fri. night at the opulent Gaylord Texan Resort.
· Entry in Saturday's show in a special area for the challengers
· 2 tickets for Sat. evening- dinner, silent auction for charity
· A room Sat. night
· 2 for Sun. brunch
In addition to bragging rights, that owner will win:
· A fabulous Blenko Art Glass trophy worth at least $500
· $500+ IN CASH.
Each Fiat club will be identified with prominent signage by their entry at ICF ‘07. The Best Spider Challenge cars will be displayed under a tent on the focal point of the ICF showfield: In front of the Awards Area. The club that sends the car winning the North American championship will receive a special accolade.
Get out your wax and prepare your car! The Best Spider Challenge ’07 has begun!

Congratulations Gary!
Rather than double posting, here is a link to a Fiat Center reply to this topic:
http://fiatcenter.com/bbv2/bbBoard.cgi? ... gtid=11842
But, I will double post a pic here with Gary and his '69 spider. This is the car that will represent So Cal at the Italian Car Fest in Sept '07, and a mighty fine choice at that!
It was quite the enjoyable day, starting with a lively breakfast with Jerry Phillips and Bob Dezzany and learning more about the big picture with what the Italian Car Fest folks are doing down in Texas. They are quite an active bunch!! Thanks, Jerry for treating us all special with a souvenir T-shirt of the upcoming show. The day just got better as it went along, spending time with all the old Fiat acquaintances and meeting a few new ones. Hollywood, I'm sorry I never met you, and maybe some others that I didn't cross paths with, but there's always next time. And special thanks to Dan for putting together a nice drive at the end of the day, with dinner on the beach at Malibu (even though my son got crazy and picked up a ticket for starting out too fast at a stop sign -- I guess trouble runs in the family).
And congrats again to Gary! We wish you a great adventure with your trek to Texas next Fall.
