Why O Why

Post by halg »

What is it that would make anyone in their right mind spend hour after hour wirebrushing the dirt and undercoating off the bottom of the car they are working on? I have just finished prepping the botom of my 69 Coupe for a new coat of undercoating. The only reason I have been able to come up with, is so that all the dirt on the car is mine all mine. Maybe I answered my own question in the first sentence, we aren't in our right mind, so we don't have to have a reason for what we do.

I like to clean off the undercoating. A lot of the time it just falls off in a lot of places, and that could easily lead to rust issue. So I just get the jump on the rust.

Hal,
I did that last year and used a propane torch to slightly heat up the undercoating and it just peeled off with a scraper. Still took hours and hours though. I didnt find the rust holes till I got rid of the undercoating. I thought I had a solid floor, when the rustproofing was removed, it was swiss cheese (aged for 30 years).

Denise is right. And for those of us lucky enough to have seen your work first hand, it is definitely a labor of love.

When I did mine, I found there was some hidden rust in some areas. I was glad to take the undercoating off. It was a week of hell. But I know there's no rust there now.
