Whats the difference between a 124 and a 124 Sport?

Post by MNspiderman »

I was wondering whats the difference between the spider 124 and the spider 124 sport? I'm guessing it was something cosmetic and maybe a different gear ratio. So If i didn't have a 124 sport but I put a 124 sport badge on the back of it, how would someone know if i were lying or not? Does the title say sport on it as well? I am clueless in this department.

Was it 68-78 they called the 124 Spider a Sport? Can't remember where it ends, but it's basically like the 79 and up being called a 2000. During certain years they were all called a 124 Sport. Nothing special that I know of.

I believe the "Sport" name was typically on a sport coupe as in the picture below (if I loaded it right). Look on the far right.

The Sport name was also used on the Spiders, but they changed the badging on the cars as Denise said - maybe in 1975 with the new engine. My '78 owner manual still says Sport Spider on the cover, but the car has no "124" badge - just the "1800" above the right tail light.

Sport was added as a marketing name and there really was not a reason for it because engines changed constantly. All I know is that the word SPORT usually referred to basic, stripped down models. Where as Spider 2000 referred to the full blown luxury edition. I could be wrong, but thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

For you who dont get the joke, there is no differences really in Spiders. Spider 2000 refers to the 2000cc engine. Sport is just a marketing name and really had nothing to do with the car. Usually Sport refers to a trim level, but there were no trim levels on Spiders.

Our '70 was badged as a "124 Sport", and the '80 is badged as a "Spider 2000". Can't say what came in between.

My 77 spider title doesn't say sport but i have a badge that says Sport. I agree that I think it was just Marketing. Was thinking they added something like a lower gear ratio like a GT, SS, RS badging of that nature. So does this mean that if you have a sport spider the title will never say sport? mine doesn't. just curious and trying to ad to the true and correct information highway.

My 71 and 72 titles don't have sport in them-just the year model, Fiat and "CN" for convertible.
