Yes, when I stripped and then disposed of my first attempt at restoring a 1979 spider, I gave away the frame to a guy who had one that was rear ended. It was a freebe to him as it was worth it to me to have it hauled off. When I signed over current registration to him, he was so stoked, he then insisted on giving me 100.00 bones for the frame due to the fact that it was registered and all fees were paid up and current. A hastel free transaction is definatly a good one.

In California, we can also thank the Governator for failing to sign the extension of the classic car exeption on smog testing cars 30 years old or older....as if I can even get the smog components when something fails. Of course, he did this the year my car turned 29 years old.

Since I can't legally convert to FI or to a better carb setup, I priced a rebuilt ADHA for my '79....$309 with a $40 core charge. Thanks Arnie.

you can legally put on an FI setup. You just have to go thru the referee certification process. We did this on the 78 black Spider for the soldier in Iraq. It's pretty easy, and inexpensive

Congrats Tom!
How did you get out of paying back fees? When I bought my 82 it had not been registered for five years. The seller hadn't disclosed this in the Ebay listing, so when I went down to check out the car and saw the expired tabs I got her to agree to a discount if I won the bid. The fees and penalties came to $487!

Y'all are in the wrong state. Although Spider pickin's are slim in Idaho......Bought a 79 Pinnafarina 2000 that had been non op for about 15 years. Last titled in Washington (aka "Caliphrigginphornica Wantabees"). Took it to Idaho DMV. Vin inspection and verification, new Idaho title, tax on purchase price, and one year registration = $75.00.

I say bring all your Spiders to Idaho. We can get Boise to pass a "State Vehicle" designation. Idaho - The Spider (and potato) State.

I'm in Missouri and just titled and got plates for the Fiat yesterday. Anything older than 1996 (OBDII) are emissions exempt but had to get safety inspected. There was a $200 penalty for the 8 years it went unregistered by the PO.

You'll need to double check on the fees, as there is no waiver on past fees with the DMV. There may be a reduction however. You'll need to get it smogged. And on the subject of smog test in CA, the tailpipe emission test is going away soon for 96 and newer cars with the costs are expected to be cut in half - that is the good news. The bad news is older cars (yes FIATS too) still have to go through the tailpipe emissions bs, and of course, the smog shops will be increasing those costs to make up for the loss of revenue on the new test. Can't win. If you're poor (hell that's middle class now) and drive a pre 96 as a solo vehicle you are s.o.l. Great state we have here.

Mark,

Referencing: "you can legally put on an FI setup. You just have to go thru the referee certification process. We did this on the 78 black Spider for the soldier in Iraq. It's pretty easy, and inexpensive."

Do you have details on this? Cal EPA told me that I could not convert it when I called them. They said it was an "unauthorized modification". They said I can replace the motor with an 81+ FI engine, but not retrofit the EFI.
