We are talking about two differnt types of racing here, F1 and NASCAR/ARCCA. The diamond racing wheels were developed for the circle track guys who like to rub, bump and what not with their cars. As for F1, road race, etc Mag or aluminum is the #1 choice.

My father had a Chevrolet conversion van that had mag wheels (I believe they were American Racing, but not positive) and one of them simply broke without even touching anything. I was with him at the time, so I know for sure that he didn't make contact with anything. It could have been nothing more than a defect in that one wheel, but I can say that I have in fact seen a mag wheel break. (Of course it happened around 12:30 a.m. in the pitch dark, but you already knew that  )

For what it's worth (which ain't much), I think there is a simplistic beauty to the black racing wheels. Purpose built, clean and neat.
