Torque for Head, Manifolds?

Post by Jon »

Does anyone have information for what the exhaust and intake manifold bolts torque down to? Also, I'm in the process of replacing the head and am looking for how much that is supposed to be torqued down as well... Thanks!

Jon, sounds like the head made the trip okay. Is everything alright with it?

Hey Mark,

Everything's great! The head was at the post office when it opened up this morning at 8. I'm bolting it all up right now and just checking specs on torque was my only question..

I took out the rest of the emissions stuff while the head was off (so if anybody is reading this and wants emissions 'junk' let me know!) and that was probably the hardest part of it all!

Thank you for sending that so quickly. Once I get the head bolted up, I just have to double check the timing and I think I'll be good to go. Right now I have the pistons set at TDC, and it looked like the Camshaft pulleys were at TDC as well, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it right!

Thanks again Mark, you were a big help in getting this all together!

Jon,
Intake and exhaust manifold nuts are torqued to 18 ft-lbs. Use an alternating pattern to bring them up gradually. I usually put sealant around the water passages on the intake, everything else stays dry.

Head bolts are torqued to 58 ft-lbs, in stages, alternating pattern (see below), with the bolt threads oiled beforehand (and oil under the bolt head, too). I usually go 20, then 40, then on up to max torque.

Head tightening sequence:
Number the head bolts on the Intake side 8, 6, 2, 5, 10, back to front.
Number the head bolts on the Exhaust side 7, 3, 1, 4, 9, back to front.
Tighten 1, 2, 3, . . . 9,10.

make sure the aux shaft pulley is lined up also! The spot on the pulley should line up with the pivot bolt on the tensioner
