Speaker Baffles
Speaker Baffles
I'm in the process of redoing my door panels and installing speakers in the square door holes on a 80 FI. Originally, I had planned on buying some 4" speaker baffles from Crutchfield's (around $10 a pair) to keep the elements from destroying the speakers. But after seeing a comment by spidernut about using flower pot liners I decided to go another route...
Here's my ghetto speaker baffle install for anyone who's interested.
I picked up some of these from Wally World for a couple of bucks. Ziploc "S" Small Square.
Cut the rim off a little where it starts to roll over and they are a perfect fit. I didn't cut the whole rim off. I left a little curve to it to hold the silicone.
Lined mine with some leftover sound deadening material.
Cut a slit in the bottom for the wires to go through.
Silicone the lip of the enclosure.
Whalla!

Re: Speaker Baffles
I like it. What are you going to do for the front? Is the lip going to create a problem when covering. What size speaker will fit in our doors without problems. And what size speaker will fit in that. That would be a good idea for the lower speaker in the fenders also. Great Idea Let us know how it sounds.
Re: Speaker Baffles
that looks great! and, it looks like they will neatly fit that opening as if they were designed to go in that square hole. Luigi was really thinking ahead, wasn't he?
additinally, that lip won't be causing any fitment problems for a standard door panel cover. the use of silicon as a sealant will also allow for easy removal if needed. i think i would have used some kind of a paper hole punch rather than the slit for the wires. that slit might expand in a larger crack given enough vibration over time.
good job. I like it. like it a lot. keep up the good work.

The lip is cut down enough so its close to flush. I left a little bit of the lip just to hold the silicone. The square hole is 4 1/2" x 5" or so. I'm installing 4 1/2" speakers. It's a pretty small hole so I don't think you could go too much larger than that. Not sure what you mean "What are you going to do for the front"? If your referring to the front fender speaker holes I'm not going to use them. My kick panels are in really good condition and I'd rather not cut holes in them. I'm building custom boxes for the back speakers.azygoustoyou wrote:I like it. What are you going to do for the front? Is the lip going to create a problem when covering. Mike I agree a better plan would have been to cut a hole and maybe insert a grommet for the wires. I only did the passenger side and still have 4 containers left so I think I'll redesign it a little.

Just a note...
The last pic with the baffle installed is prior to bracing it for the glue to dry. It's sticking out just a little. Once it was fully pushed in and the glue dried it's almost flush with the door.

At least it will keep the speakers fresh and crispy. Fiat tupperwear party?

Re: Speaker Baffles
No problem with the window. The pre-82s have side curtains don't they?

Re: Speaker Baffles
Not sure about any other year but on my 80 FI the speakers are in the forward most part of the door so the baffles don't impede the window from rolling down.pope wrote:Did you try to rolling the window down with it in place?
Thanks for the compliments guys.

Re: Speaker Baffles
I finished up the door panels last night and the speakers sound really good. We'll as good as you can get out of 4 1/2" speaker. I did run into one problem (the one you mentioned earlier about the window rolling down), the Alpine speakers have a fairly large decorative speaker grill that gets in the way of the window crank. It wont fully rotate . Replacing the grill with a low profile generic mesh one should solve the problem.azygoustoyou wrote:I can't wait to hear what you say about the sound. I hope thier perfect.

Re: Speaker Baffles
I have found that if you go to a local pic apart you can find baffels of almost any size and shape for almost nothing. Just look at the newer cars and thier there. they would have better acoustics and be cheaper. But if there are none local, your idea is the next best thing.
Re: Speaker Baffles
Good idea. I'm not sure if there's even one near me though. I'm kinda spoiled having Vick's and AutoRicambi 20 min away from my house. Along with all you guys on here parting out cars I never seem to run out of suppliers to feed the addiction.spiderrey wrote:I have found that if you go to a local pic apart you can find baffels of almost any size and shape for almost nothing.
