I'm done with Fiats!
Well not really, but for a while. It seems our new house is kicking my butt, hats off to you guys that do this stuff for a living.
It's been three weeks and so far we've torn out the particle board subfloor, removed the panneling and retextured, repainted, tore out the kitchen, (man I'd like to meet the guy who built those cabinets in place with 4,000 nailes) . I took off this week as "vacation", so I'm installing hardwood , (red oak strip) flooring. The cabinets should be here tomorrow.
Then all I have to do is move and get my old house ready to rent out! It will be worth it in the end though, I'll have a bigger garage, warmer weather, near by twisty roads and a spot to build my dream shop, but if I'm not around for a while it's not 'cause I don't like ya, I'm either working, working on the house or sleeping

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
you're gonna make me feel bad!
I'm doing a Master bath and a large-ish deck this year, and calling that good. Then I get to go back to working on the car!
I've got a major basement remodel coming-up... probably next year, depending on our profitability this year...

Man - give me the FIATS anyday! You have one helluva project there!
Re: I'm done with Fiats!
I just finished a 1000 sq ft. addition to my cottage that took me 2 years, so I know what your going through. I too did it solo.
Re: I'm done with Fiats!
it's really cool that you guys have fireplaces in your garages, but also sad that you need them.

Classy digs, Pope. Trey, I feel for you. Nothing ever goes as planned and always takes twice as long, but you'll have something to be proud of in the end. Ron and I built our own house with the help of a few neighbors. It took three years of 7 days a week and no vacations to get it done. I didn't ever want to slap mud on another block or sand any more drywall in my lifetime but I am proud of what we accomplished.

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
I thought every garage had a fireplace ! This one's made from a couple of cast iron truck brake drums and works a treat - all I need now is an airconditioner for those few weeks of intense heat during summer. So Cal Mark wrote:it's really cool that you guys have fireplaces in your garages, but also sad that you need them.

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
For the last two years on nights and weekends I've been helping my buddy down the street remodel his home. In exhcange he gave me beer everytime I worked, and let me store a parts car and several shelves of parts in his garage. When my lease was up in November we got the house to a point where it could be seperated upstairs and downstairs. My wife and I moved into the downstairs which is mostly on ground level with plenty of windows.
Now I get a place to stay in exchange for work. There are several windows to case in and trim out, the whole exterior needs re-sided, a garage gets nocked down and then rebuilt, and a deck that connects the 2nd floor to the roof of the garage.
I've been working on 3 people's spiders out here, (almost constantly) Working an 8-6 salary job, working on the house, trying to clean up and sell parts, and now we are trying to have a baby. My daily driver spider has not been washed in about a year, I've had a big brake kit, dual carbs, and alquati cams, for over a year now and have not installed any of them, let alone all the other projects I want to do.
I better get back to work before my wife gets prego, I may have only 9 months to get all the above done.

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
Wow Matt - sounds like you're having more fun than most of us
I also use the long winter months for home reno projects - to pass the time productively. This year I've replaced a ceiling, refreshed a linen closet and remodeled a bathroom with a ceramic tile floor. Next I'll do the other bathroom floor and the front hall floor. Then I'll take a deep breath before committing to doing the kitchen floor, which is much larger. It's like banging your head against a brick wall - it feels good when you stop!

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
I usually try to use the off season to do my car projects, a trans rebuild for the '82 was on the list as well as finishing up my '72. As soon as I got it roadworthy, I drove it straight to storage. Oh well, there's always next winter, (or the one after that).

Re: I'm done with Fiats!
I hear ya man. I started tiling our livingroom a while back and it ended up taking me 6 months to get it done. The wife and kids were real troopers. Turned out pretty good if I do say so myself. The total cost was just a couple bucks under 1K though. Not bad for 760 sq ft. Stick with it. Although, you will forever only notice the imperfections. Everyone else will like it.
By the way, you do nice work too.
