Post by adrians »

General question,

Does the Handbrake cable on the right hand side on the car

a) Go over or under the lower trailing arm ?

and

b) go over or under the exhaust pipe ?

Thanks

I thought the lower trailing arms had a metal tag type thing attatched. The hand brake cable was routed so this bit caught it. Lower on one of the arms and I think upper on the other. It definately goes under my exhaust.

G'day Adrian,
Although the handbrake cable is meant to go under the lower trailing arms and sit on the little metal tabs welded to them, I found that on SPYDUH the cable has a straighter run by going on top of the trailing arm, because the car has been lowered.
Here's a pic to help explain - you can see the tab below the trailing arm where the cable is meant to go.
The cable also runs above the exhaust pipe.

I have often wondered about the proper routing for the handbrake cable. On my first 81 Spider 2000 I thought it was strange the handbrake cable clip was on the bottom of the trailing arm on the driver side and on the top of the trailing arm on the passenger side and. Rotating the trailing arms makes the tabs point out of alignment with the cable direction so I left it the way it was. The cable was routed above the exhaust. Since then I purchased 2 Spider 2000's that have been stored for approx 15 years with a little over 70,000 miles on them. Both of them have the cable below the trailing arm on the driver side and above the trailing arm on the passenger side. I believe these have not been touched or altered since new. Both of them had rusty and frozen parking brake cables. Both of them had the passenger cable pass under the exhaust.
The top photo on page 33-26 of shop manual shows driver side cable below the trailing arm. Pg 44-19 shows the passenger side cable passing below the exhaust. I think it also shows it passing above the trailing arm but my photo in the manual is a little too dark to say positively.

Wow, I have to quit driving on the gravel road I live on. The under side of your car is absolutely spotless. NICE!
