side marker lens

Post by 1idman »

Does anybody know if it's possible to use the side marker lens from a 79-85 spider in an earlier model spider? Will the lens fit inside the plastic chrome bezel of a mid 70's car the part number of the lens is 4420971

Yep, what he said. Lens itself is the same, but the later flush housing is smaller and can't be swaped to an early car.

Can you pop the lens out of the later model and install it in the bezel of the early model?

I've been wondering- Are the side markers required by law? Can they be eliminated totally?

I'm sure they were a D.O.T. requirement when the car was built, but most cops most likely wouldn't notice or care.

Laws in all states require a visible side marker. Thats why from 67 to 68 you see side markers. cougars, camaros, mustangs, etc. I often wonder about this myself. Even Chip Foose on Overhaulin' removes side markers. I think its about as legal as blue dot tail lights or unibody bumper removal. Which are illegal. It works like this. If you were to stand 40' from your side door in the center of the car and shinned a flashlight at your car, It is required by law to see some sort of side reflection at the front and rear of the vehicle. Thats it, a pretty simple law. They do not have to be lit up. just there and reflective. Its obviously so an oncoming car knows your there. This is why some new cars have some ugly headlights that wrap around the side of the car with orange in them. Makes sense. I love cars without sidemarkers too. But I think i would install those cute little round ones somewhere in there. Now I love bumperettes and Cobra bumpers. But by law. I don't know what year. All unibody vehicles are required to have some kind of metal bumper connecting one side of the car to the other side of the car other wise its illegal too. The bumper is considered a part of the body/frame work and therefore is not removable by law. But i think these are some of the laws that the enforcement brothers let slide to a certain degree. So when you see that fine looking gentleman rolling around in his 1988 Olds Delta diesel with the 2x4 lumber bumper thats legal because a big olds has a full frame and is not unibody construction.

The later and earlier side marker lenses are the same size and can be interchanged between the two different housing types. However the bulb socket connection is different, the earlier type has two small tabs that hold the bulb boot on to the back of the lens, the later type has one tab. The friction fit between the lens and the bulb holder will let either one work, but you may want to check it periodically.
