Coil Upgrade

Post by HOLLYWOODSPIDER »

I've recently replaced the dual point distributor in my '78 Spider with a stock electronic ignition from an '81 Spider.

When I got the car, the original coil had been upgraded to a Blue Bosch Supercoil. Can I switch the coil that came in the electronic ignition (original magneti marelli) with the Supercoil? Will there be any benefit?

IMHO either coil will be more than adequate. I also believe that you won't be able to see a significant difference between the two coils in normal driving conditions.

i recently changed from dual points to the Crane system. Man, am i glad i made that switch. all i needed *not* was another item to constantly tinker with.

usually coils for electronic systems and points systems have different resistances, and aren't compatible.
As for the perf module, I've yet to see anything published that states what the differences from a stock unit are and why they're better

I tried the coil swap, and I'm switching back tomorrow. Usually runs fine, but occasionally won't idle. Original is better.

The original coil makes a sloshing, liquidy sound when I shake it. Is that normal? The Bosch coil doesn't make any sound when shaken.

Rule #436 in the Fiat repair guide:
Do not shake things that are not supposed to be shaken. It will cause more worry and expedite an attack of the Fiat Gremlins.
