mild hesitation under load

Post by freespider »

My '80 fuel injected spider suddenly developed a hesitation under load that typically occurs while going through the gears, between 1500-2500 rpm. It is never really bad, unless I try to lug it in 4th while going slow.

I would think if the fuel pump were going out or the fuel filter clogged, the hesitation would get worse with load/rpm.

Idle is also fine (a bit rich, but stable).

I plan to tear into it this weekend, so I am looking for some suggestions.

you should get a copy of the FI diagnosis manual and have a volt/ohmmeter for measuring resistances. Without those, you're pretty much reduced just checking connections.
I'd make sure the intake boot isn't cracked and the AFM flap moves thru its' range without binding. Inspect any other vacuum hoses also. Air leaks will drive your FI system crazy, so look the intake system over closely

I do have a copy of that, and a nice DVM so that was going to be one of the first things to do.

The intake boot is cracked in a few places (I repaired with silicone a few months ago) but that may have failed. I actually just received a new replacement today, along with bunch of other stuff.

It was the intake boot. I replaced it this evening and the hesitation is gone. Tomorrow I replace all kinds of stuff: timing belt, thermostat, flex coupling, etc. Should be fun!
