Updates on Moving To New Server

Post by Site Owner »

All -
I'm going to use this topic to keep everyone up to date on the progress in moving our site to a new managed hosting facility.
I've been working on it this week, in particular tonight and last night. I have a new version of phpBB installed on the new server, however we've got some issues with it. I'm working with tech support now and they have been very responsive (good sign). I've got a ticket open and they're working on resolving the issues. My plan is once the new install is up and working properly, I'm going to try to load in the most recent backup of the whole board and test it. I'm going to pound on it hard and I'm not going to cut over until I'm sure everything is 100% solid. There is no way of avoiding the fact that it's going to be a pain in the #$% because this is a huge amount of data and a very tricky infrastructure. That being said, I'm confident we'll get there soon and we we get it done we'll have a much faster, more reliable and enhanced experience here. In the meantime I'll do my best to keep an eye on our "old horse" of a server! Thanks for all the support and patience!

Folks -
Last night's and today's downtime was my fault. I was trying to export the database again and screwed up the SQL server.
It's fixed now. We may go through a little bit of this kind of thing over the next few weeks while I'm working this out but I promise to stay on it, keep an eye on it and try to have it available as much as possible. So if it goes down any over the next few weeks, don't panic. When we get to the other side of this we'll be set for a long while.

Oh, and one more thing, I'm backing up the entire deal pretty much daily now. So in the very unlikely event that the whole thing gacks itself - we're covered, we won't lose it.

Thanks,
Evan

Evan -

I'll say thanks and let you know that there are some people out here who could lend hand if you need any 'technical/software' support. You have clearly been doing this awhile, so are probably pretty good with it. But, if you ever need some assistance, I could probably find some.

I thought this option was available before the upgrade. I remember I had to click a radio button to opt in for notifications.
