A current prospect - 1974

Post by dozy »

So right now i am looking at one car.

The lodown is that is a surpringly original car in a well worn condition. The top, interior, and much else are all original and while worn, wok OK. The car is a daily driver - it jsutdrove from Denver to Austin and the seller is driving it to work every day as his other car is being fixed up after a collision.

However the negative side is that the car was riding for seven years on the care of a meticulous PREVIOUS owner. The current one fixed what broke and left it alone otherwise. And now it needs some attention - at least so it seems - see below..

The price is $3500

THE BAD
- here are a few rust-through spots that he patched up, but not professionally - will need to be redone. 4 of them
--- on top behind each headlight
--- on the bottom right behind the front wheel well.
--- he used body filler and filled those up, but have no cluse how well he got rid of the rust .. so will need to be redone.
- the handbrake does not work
--- either cable or the whole assembly is broken
- The engine needs rings or something more
--- it is tricking with RPM's
- the breaks seem weak (but that might be just a Spider thing)
- sun visors are missing
- the top is original and worn
---- it works OK - but not perfect - it lets in a lot of air, and in hard rain would leak.
---- there is a small (1/3 inch) duct-taped rip.
- the interior is usable but the seams have come apart at places.
--- the dash is warped from the texas sun - has a pad on top
--- the seats are torn at seam, but perfectably useable
--- the sea cusions are in good shape

The GOOD
- the car is complete:
--- original paint,
--- all glass
--- all interior
--- all trim.
--- Even the few things that have fallen off are there
- electronic starter (oh goodness something is replaced aand now roks fine)
- the engine is very strong and works just fine
--- - I took it on the HWY and did 70-75 mph in it
- the heat and headlights work, wipers work
- new stereo installed
- the headlights are replaced and halogen

I have yet to climb under the car for rust and have yet to take it to my mechanic, but the price is offered with the assumption that there is nothing there that is a concern.

The car also has an aftermarket exhaust - not sure what brand - will find out. It is very very loud, but somehow, I love it! either way - it soulh be in a better shape than the original exhaust would have been - I am sure.

I will keep you posted.
I have a few pictures and will post them soon.

What do y'all think? A good deal so far? Not? thanks

Do yourself a favor and inspect the bottom side, the frame and rockers. Best to do on a lift.

Pass. You are looking at $1K for interior and top if you do it yourself another $1K for paint and body again if you do it yourself and who knows how much for the engine work and this is just for what you know about. If there is evidence of body rust there most likely will be rust in the floors and rockers.

There is a rust free '79 here with good interior in need of a top and starter for $1K. There are better deals out there, keep looking. My .02

Good points - sidenote - where is the '79 ... I looked and did not find the one you are mentioning.

I am considering buying a car elsewhere and shipping it down here .. but that is a discussion for another day ...

Thanks for the feedback so far ... please keep coming back and adding to it .. I will post the pictures. I plan on driving up there and crawling under the car before I take it to the mechanic. I will keep y'all updated.
