Engine Transplant

Post by deftone »

I currently have a "decent" 1600 for my '69 spider. But as a racer (not in my spider) and horsepower freak, I was wanting something a little quicker, what types of engine transplants have been done? anything other than an engine from a later model spider?

All of the engines can be used as long as you change the right parts to make it fit .
The most power is going to be from a 2L but if your looking for an easy upgrade
without much work a 1800 will fit, you would need to drill out the flywheel bolt holes
to use the smaller 1600 flywheel .

Parts are still reasonble for the 1800 and they can rev like a 1600 ...

well the car needs a LOT of work to see it roadworth again, it was only purchased by me on Saturday after sitting in somebodys back yard since 1985. So a quick and easy replacement isnt the most important thing in my thought process (although I wouldnt be complaining about an easy swap!!) Would something like the turbocharged engine from the Punto GT fit?

Your better off going to turbo124.com for an answer to that Q some of those guys do
the Euro Car Mods on the 124s i haven't seen that one yet .

I used to race a 131 with a 2L engine fully built that could take a stock 5.0 Mustang
in a 1/4 mile no turbo or nos just engine and that was stock gears .

With 175 HP your Spider would fly and that can be achived without a turbo on pump
gas .

I dont know if you are still looking for an engine. But the F20c (s2000 engine) fits like a glove and you wont need to turbo charge it. Although you will have to make more "vertical" room for the tranny.

with plenty of good fabrication on your side anything can be done. The particular transplant I know about was done in Australia with success. Not only that but the F20c is one of the most versatile engines to work with. ( If you plan on buying one make sure you get the wiring harness too.) If you are looking for a common swap the rx7 engine is the way to go.

here is how versatile this engine is:

I am seriously pondering the idea of putting in my alfa romeo gtv6 all aluminum engine in my fiat. Its a v6 with a transaxle meaning It would have independent rear suspension with the tranny between the rear wheels giving the car about a 50/50 balance. Those engines sound awesome.

are you talking about a spider or a 2 door hardtop coupe? Sometimes ya never know what one means.

So you know a bit about the alfa romeo do you mark, thats cool. Its hard on one hand to ruin a completely good alfa romeo gtv6 for a project that might never get finished due to unforseen complications. But on the other hand having an all aluminum Italian V6 hemi under the hood with the transaxle back in the rear sounds way cool too, of course with abarth flares. I really do like the 2.5 Its in a class all by itself. although the 3.0, 3.2, 3.7, turbo, twin turbo, twin cam engines are really badass too I think I'd stick with what I have and not go all monster with it. If I were to do that, then I'd rather just get an aluminum 302 and wedge it in there. That being said. I like my V6.

I have a 73 coupe (not a Spider) that I want to stuff the Alfa motor in. It's coming from a trashed Milano that is mostly parted out now. The idea is to use the rear transaxle in the coupe to end up with sort of a mini-Milano
