I found that when I dial my motor to TDC the water pump likes to leak (I had a feeling that the berings were going out). HMMMM . I've been looking at it from every different angle and it seems that I can just take it out without removing the timing belt but I have been hearing different from others. Can the water pump be removed without taking off the timing belt. Maybe when they are saying timing belt they really mean the other belt.
Other notes - switched out the distributer this past weekend and replaced the points with the electronic distributor - Thanks Mike R. for all your help. Makes a real difference !!!
Found some shorts in the fan system - Just popped on while cold, sitting and without the engine running or ignition on- could account for those times I have a dead battery for no reason. Also, popping fuses to that system as well - FUN FUN FUN
Water pump.
Re: Water pump.
lots of advice says to replace the water pump every time the t-belt is replaced because of that interference issue. the pump is inexpensive enough that it isn't worth the hassle to wait until the pump fails.
Re: Water pump.
I just replaced the water pump on my 76. Crapped out about a week after I had replaced the timing belt. Should have listened to the advice of our more experienced sage members. I did not have to remove the timing belt. All four bolds are accessable and the surface was easy to get at to clean for the new gasket.
Good luck,
Jim
