Potential New Fiat Owner

Hey every,
I've randomly come across a 1981 fiat spider 2000 for sale at work. I really didn't know much about them before but thought it was a good/sexy looking car. After checking out this forum it has definitly been making me think about buying it. However seeing how I am not very familiar with the car I was hoping all you experts might be able to help me out so I have an enjoyable good introduction to the world of fiat. Some thing to consider is I am not very mechanically inclined. I do have a garage and all up coming winter though to learn as I go with some help from friends. So here is the info on my potential purchase.


Im selling my 1981 Fiat 2000 Spider
its black, 63000 original miles, its a 4 cylinder 5 speed fuel infection, i replaced the valve seals, new gaskets, new water pump, new timing belt and pully, new exhaust, theres 4 new tires along with a full size spare in trunk, the body is custom, bumpers were removed, vinyl interior, black carpeted, original working am/fm tape deck, runs good nice ride!

Besides the "fuel infection" it sounds like a reasonable price ($3000 OBO) to me. If someone can give me a hint on how to add a picture I will post that as well. The car is in the northeast by the way, Groton Connecticut. If anyone is from the area and willing to help or know a mechanic in the area that would be great.

If possible, I'd try to get the car up on a lift for an inspection, if you can fine a good mechanic so much the better. It sounds pretty nice, but rust and frame cracks would be my main concern.

It sounds like it would be worth it if there are no rust issues, it runs as well as the seller says, and the tranny's in good shape. I do wonder though, why the valve work was necessary with such low mileage.

Check for Rust. Then check for Rust. Then check for Rust. And then, do a final check underneith for RUST!

Here is a picture of the potential purchase. I sent the seller an email asking things like if he has a title, rust, why he is selling it, previous owners, any known problems that need some tlc etc. I hope it works out cause the more I think of it the more I want it.

Actually, it looks pretty nice. I wonder what body mods he did. The ad mentions them.

the car does look good. I expect the body mods are bumper removal and parking light installation

It looks like that car needs to be driven at least 140 MPH.

For $3k it should be rust free with a decent interior. I'd be wary of modified Spiders (sorry you bumper-removal guys) as only about .000000005% of owners can execute any sort of modification without making the changes permanent and irreversible. Bumpers look better than boat taillights any day of the week IMHO.

That model year was fuel injected and it works great, FI was the most powerful stock delivery system installed on the cars and when working correctly - which is not difficult to achieve - they are awesome to drive.

If you like to work on cars the 124 Spider is as forgiving as they come. And one of the best looking cars ever made.

Just put the bumpers back on it. I implore thee....
