found a diamond in the rough

searchin through the craigslist this morning and came across this 70 spider.200 dollars later its sittin in my dads garage. hopefully this project goes smoothly and pushes my x1/9 farther back. haha. let me know what you guys think. its complete and has the rare items intact.

Crikey,$200 bucks... here that would be the deal of the century(all 9 years anyway) That grill is rare,a guy in San diego wants $250 with emblem,the bumper front anywheres $150-900.00. Good job/find. I'm envious.
I recently bought one(72) for $ 300 cdn and needs a few bits to finish.

if you look closely at the pic above my 70 at the right corner on the desk there is a new grill in the wrapper still, for sale if i get a decent offer, also have used one for sale, have a set of early bumpers 4 sale too. used. front one is preety straight.

the new owener inspecting the car after delivery. he has inspected every fiat that has passed thru this garage.

well, we started chipping away at this rough diamond today. replaced all the fuel line and couldnt get fuel to the carby. the po just installed a new fuel pump./ a little frustrating. after thinking about it for a while, we went back our and used a air hose to blow thru the line. no problem there. then i grabbed the shop vac, put the hose the the fuel line at the pump and sucked it thru in about 2 seconds. fuel problem solved. now the car only gives a weak crank? the odd thing is without a key in the ignition with the battery hooked up the charging light is on. im thinking a wire is grounding out somewhere.

well, we figured out why the charging light was on without the key in. we swapped alternators and that solved nothing. we then checked the wires on the ignition switch, they were so wrong it was silly. we rewired the swtch using the manuel. when the battery was hooked up no more alt light. 1 down 10 thousand to go. we still cant get the starter to crank the motor. it just makes noise.
oh well, screw it. the engine and trans came out today. the car will be completely strippedd or whats left of the interior and power washed inside and out. this will be a very slow and thourough build if chris stays focused. if nothing else it gives us something to do together. i will post pics later today.
a couple questions though.
1 does a 1400 and 1608 use the same or different timing belts.
2 do these 2 motors use the same or different timing covers. i guess one question would answer the other.
i have what is supposed to be a very good 1608 that will be put into this car after being regasketed, its been sitting in my garage for a while.
3 i forget if these motors use different bellhousings. i have a bellhousing in my parts stash but dont know where it came from.

I know the timing belts are different since I ordered one for my 70 and never got a chance to put it on. I was going to use it for the 1608 engine we just built but IAP told me I needed a different belt. I believe the bellhousings are different but Ace could tell you for sure.

well, we have a brand new 1438 timing belt that i guess will go on ebay so we can get a 1608 belt. what about the timing covers?

Looks like a fun project. The 1608 is taller than the 1438 and that's why the belt is longer, so I don't think the cover is the same. I went backwards in my '72, from a 1608 to a 1438. The 1438 bellhousing, flywheel and clutch are smaller then the later ones, but can be used on the bigger engine as long as you use all of the early components, (Ace is running the 1438 stuff behind his built 1756). If you need a 1608 timing cover, maybe we can swap, I have a 1608 cover but need a 1438 one. It has some peeling black paint over the yellow, but is otherwise good. Good luck with your project.
