Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Thinking about installing this baby myself but only problem is that I've never worked on a carb before. Just did my own oil change for the first time last week, worked out good. From a 1-10 what would you rate the difficulty level for switching out the old stock 79 carb to the DFEV. If I do get a local mechanic to put it in, what do you think would be a fair price for them to charge?
This may be a long shot but can anyone provide me with step by step installation instructions? Pics would be very helpful!!
I've got the:
1)Weber 32/36 DFEV
2)12 mm spacer
3) spacer gaskets
4) 1.75 " Chrome Air Filter Assembly

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
you will need a piece of linkage that is not provided with the 32/36, or failing to find it, you will need to modify your existing linkage to fit the new carburetor. you are converting from water choke to electric choke, and the new carb has a choke kick down lever connected to the throttle linkage.
providing you have that piece.... the conversion process will take someone about 30 minutes tops, needing only a 13mm wrench.
if you feel you cannot handle the task, ask you mechanic what one hour of his time is worth. that would be the maximum i'd expect him to charge you.
the existing linkage on the old carburetor CAN be modified to fit the new carb.
install instructions?
1. remove old carb
2. plug fuel return line
3. plug intake manifold tubes
4. plug coolant lines
5. install spacer
6. install new carb
7. install linkage & fuel line
8. install dizzy advance hose
9. power the choke with the feed from the old idle soleniod
10. install lunch box cleaner
11.go like hell...
easy peasy

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV? pics posted
Ok today I attempted to try and hook it up myself. I got the old air cleaner off and then I began looking to see what each component was and seeing what I need to hook back up and what I can toss.
I took the following pics to show you guys and hopefully you can identify each part for me.
I have a pretty good Idea what each one is just want to make sure.

B-

D-

I believe D and C are the water choke lines and since I'm not using them for the new carb I can just join those two lines together, right? Someone said that is a good place to bleed the cooling system.
Here's the DFEV now:
What goes in where I labeled A-B-C?
A is where I hook up the electric choke, right?
What does this part do? It doesn't look connected to anything

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
you must have an automatic transmission. That tube is the vacuum source for the modulator, which makes the tranny shift. It has to be hooked up to manifold vacuum
Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Yup its an automatic. Wheres the manifold vacuum located? Thanks.
Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
on the new carb
a-electric choke 12volt connection
b-fuel intake from the pump
c-vacuum advance port for the dizzy
are you replacing your intake manifold? or are you keeping the stock manifold?
old carb
a-fuel return
b-fuel filter on the supply line
c-water line for hot water choke
d-water line for hot water choke
e-emissions crap
f-ditto
g-ditto
you're gonna have no use for "a" and "c" thru "g" with the new carburetor. Good luck passing any emission control testing with the new carb.... that is unless you are lucky enough to live in a state where they don't test.
the new carburetor has a fuel inlet, a dizzy vacuum port, and a electrical connection for the choke ... that's all.

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Thanks mbouse your information is what keeps me going. Today I got the stock carb off, capped the fuel return line, but I'm still a little mixed up about what smog stuff to get rid of or plug up, where's the dizzy hose that I plug into the new carb? How do I modify the linkage?
Here's some more pics:
1-What about this hose?
2-This?
3-Dizzy hose?
4-
5-top hose for vapor filter
6- Do I ditch this thing?
7- What's this part for?
8-bottom hose for vapor canister
9- What do I do with the gas vapor Filter canister?

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
1. i cannot see either end of that hose. follow it to the end and tell me where it is plugged in. if it is connected to the distributor, then it goes on the new carburetor at the "c" location of your original new carburetor picture.
2. disregard this thang. it has no relevant use on your new carb
3. did you connect your two water lines together with a white plastic connector? if that plastic can sustain antifreeze at +200°F then you should be o.k.
4. same as #2
5. remove that hose and plug that fitting on the charcoal canister
6. ditch
7. emissions control
8. there will remain only one hose at the charcoal canister, and that one should be connected to a steel tube leading directly to the fuel tank. the other connections should be plugged.
9. some folks would ditch the charcoal canister. since there is a line to the fuel tank still hooked up (non-pressurized tank) i would keep the charcoal canister in place.. hooked up to this steel line. what does it hurt?
send me a copy of that side by side new/old carburetor to my email address. i will do my best to mark them up and detail what can be done to salvage some linkage from one carb to the other. i cannot state it as simply without drawing some pictures.

nice hand model, btw. is he related to my mechanic Guido?

Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Here is mbouse instructions on how to modify the old linkage. Will do this tomorrow! Thanks.
Feel free to post this reply at the website, or not, as you see fit. On the left is the new 32/36 Weber DFEV electric choke, on the right is the old 28/32 Weber stock water choke.
You’ll notice that on the choke/throttle linkage there is an arm that activiates the choke, essentially opening the choke when the throttle is depressed. This is a desirable function and you need to keep that choke connected to the throttle. That gun metal gray part is shaped in a square “Uâ€. carefully remove that part, and cut off two thirds of the “Uâ€, and return the resulting flat piece back to the carburetor. Do not put the nut or lock washer on yet.
Next, look at the old carb, and find the sickle shaped throttle linkage with the ball for the ball/socket connection. Remove this part from the old carburetor.
Put the old linkage on the new carb, on top of the 1/3rd gray colored choke part. Add the lockwasher (if there is room) and firmly attach the nut.
Zingo-bingo, you are ready to go.
Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
Mike is just full of great info. Now I know what to do with my char filter and how to change over my linkage on my carb.
Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
You all ROCK! we are doing the same mod. but changing to the 1800 manifold as well. Great info and pix.
Re: Installation instructions for 32/36 DFEV?
that's the best way, mike... change out that manifold for the full affect.co200balt wrote:You all ROCK! we are doing the same mod. but changing to the 1800 manifold as well. Great info and pix.
