RPM's at speed

Post by barnesjtsl »

1979 Spider 2000

Just got my project car on the road. Up until now I have just driven it around the cul-de-sac. I drove it 32 miles to work today.

When running at 60 mph in 5th gear the tachometer reads just over 3000 rpm's.

Is this normal?

I am totally new to these cars. I normaly drive a 94 Camry and it runs at around 2200 rpms at 60 mph.

Thanks for any comments,

roughly, yup.

in fifth gear
60mph= ~3000rpm
80mph= ~4000rpm
90mph= ~4500rpm

that way you can gauge what that rinky dink 85 mph speedo meter SHOULD be reading after you peg the needle. or, replace the speedometer!!

i haven't had the nerve to top end my two litre with a 140mph speedo installed.... something about those little tires and stock brakes on michigan roads surrounded with bovine torpedos lurking in the shadows. i lose my nerve at 90+
