Rear sway bar installation.

Post by henry »

Does anybody have written instructions on how to install a rear IAP sway bar? IAP does not have the instructions available at this moment.

It's pretty straight forward. Loosely install the hardware on the bar and end links. Attach the bar to the axle and center it, but don't tighten down the axle hardware yet. With the end link assembily loosely assembled position the top end link mounting bracket on the frame rail and mark where the holes need to be drilled, do this for both sides. You want the end link to be vertical. Drill the holes larger than needed so the "U" shaped bolt can go up and come back down. Tighten everything up.

Is it an Addco sway bar? I didn't like the standoff bracket for the axle because it would not tighten and kept spreading untill the sway bar came in contact with the diff cover. I ended up making my own standoff from a piece of derlin

I can snap some pictures of the installed bar and the custom brackets if you are interested.

Hi Henry. I KNOW what you mean, caus I just installed mine this last weekend. The instructions suck! Matt is correct as usual. I found it necessary to use some spacers on the U bolts for the axle as there were not enough threads to tighten the assbly to the axle. Also, the inner squarish bracket that goes inside the U bolt on the axle would not install because it hit the boss arm for the brake compensator. I cut a section out so it would clear the arm. I could take some pics?

I was thinking of installing one on my 80. Is there a difference in the sway-bars from different vendors or all about the same?
I was hoping the install would not be like an Ikea project.

How do you guys like your rear bars? I have one, but have yet to install it, because several on mirafiori's racer's forum had negative results.

Hard to say, I didn't drive aggressively before installing the bar...but I do now. So I don't have a good reference point.

I've herd of guys doubling up the long trailing arms and they say it had the same effect as a rear sway bar.

The racers forum and the occasional/daily dirver forum are two different animals.

I really did not feel a big difference. Its more a feel on the straits where you trun slightly. I hav'nt been agressive either.
