My car died! Fuel Pump? Help!

Post by niro884 »

I had my baby out for a great drive the other day and everything was great....until I got to an intersection and the car just stopped! It turns over no problem, but would not start. I wqas pissed. It ruined my whole day. Yes I am passionate about these cars and look forward to my Sunday drive all week!! Much to my dismay I had to tow it back home! (flat bed of course). My mechanic suspects either ignition or fuel supply (fuel pump), but he hasn't had a chance to look at it yet. Any suggestions???? Has this happened to anyone?? Is the fuel pump straight forward to replace? Looks easy to get to if it is the pump. Where should I get one? They seem pricey.

Thanks all

They are pretty easy to replace and are straight forward. An OEM Bosch 69133 is availble at the CarQuest Autoparts for $81. Pretty good price!

I'd check both the ignition system and fuel system before ordering a pump. Likely candidates are ignition module and pickup if you have no spark, or dual relay or pump if no fuel pressure. Also look at the intake boot for splits

On my car and a couple others I've been involved with had the same symptoms. In these cases it turned out to be the inline fuse that goes to the dual relay via the brown with white wire. If the fuse is bad, or the holder isn't making good contact the power can't get to the fuel pump. You can diagnose this easily. Put a test light on the green with black wire coming out of the dual relay, it should have power when you crank the engine.

Had the same problem. Took the wife out to dinner. Had a wonderful time. Spider ran great there and back. Went out to the garage in the am to run out for bagels. Turned over like a champ but would not start. Fellow FIAT owner responed like the 7th Calvary at Fort Apache. Showed me how to replace the defective fuel pump. Had me up and running in no time.

Thanks in advance!!

It is located up behind the main fuse panel. it's sometimes hard to find because there's a bunch of wires up there. It's a brown wire with a white stripe, and if the fuse holder is original it is red. I found mine pushed up on top of a brace under the dash after much searching. Here's a picture showing the original type fuse holder (red one) and the standard AGC type fuse holder I replaced the original one with.:

Image

My original fuse holder with the ends being spade connectors onto it didn't have a good solid connection, and I'd loose power to the dual relay for the fuel pump. The car would crank, but not start. I'd have to wiggle the brown with white wire to get a good connection at the fuse holder. Once I replaced the fuse holder, it's never done it again.
There are about three major wire looms that are against the firewall behind the fuse panel. The brown with white wire loops out of and back into the one that is behind the other looms if I remember correctly.

I'm having trouble getting phtobucket to size the image down so the whole wiring mass is shown. :?

The blue clips in the upper right corner is a deadly sin  to install in the car over here, they will work fine in the beginning but will soon start corroding and give you a big headache.

Scotch Locks we call em. Under the dash in non- salty areas they work OK, under the car or anywhere exposed they don't last long.

I put one of them in my car, the others were there. But, I've been using them since 1965 and never had a problem with a single one, so I wasn't worried.
