K&N Filter

Post by Mark_vaughn »

I am thinking of replacing the existing air filter/holder with an 11" K&N filter assembly. I will have to fabricate a base plate for it to sit on, but that shouldn't be too hard and would fit in the stock place. This and a free flow exhaust would be the only modifications to the stock 1800 engine.

Just wondering if anyone has done this or something similar and how it turned out. Increased power? Would you recommend it or not?

It has been done before, and is generally recommended... anything that free up breathing is good. It seems to be especially effective on FI cars.

I have a K&N on my FI car works great with a few other mods
as well I'm running pretty good about 130 to 140 HP ...

Dan- I am VERY curious to know what mods you did to get that kind of HP, that's the range I would shoot for on my FI car when I next throw money at the engine. What did you do? Did you dyno it?

What cam did you use? IAP told me the Autocross Cam is too hot for the street, which made me want it more.

The auto cross cams would be close to what i am running and no
there not to hot for the street you will end up with a little lope in
the idle big deal . Your power band will be higher in the RPM range
but around 3000 RPM it will start to pull once you hit 5 even harder
so you'll lose some low end but these engine dont have much
any ways . The TC loves RPM thats what makes them run good
not low end torqe .
Most people when it comes to building a street TC they feel you need
to keep it very mild well the auto cross cams aren't really that much
more from a hot street cams just bump it up there not even a race
cam in my option !

IAP uses that standard line with their cam sales to cover their asses. The autocross cams as Dan said are not too hot at all for the street. They're great cams. HOWEVER, autocross cams don't work well with stock FI. And I suspect that is probably what they meant by "too hot". They need better induction and compression to get the most out of them.

I upped the comp on my 1608 to 9:8, ported and polished the head, original 4-2-1 exhaust and 42/82 cams with dual 40 idf's. It idles smooth with no loping, accelerates smooth with decent bottom end torque, but you can actually feels a kick in the pants around 4K. Fun, fun, fun! :D
Next step is to open up the exhaust and play with jetting and see what happens.

Hi,

Which gears will I notice the increase in power with the K & N filter - 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th? Will it be noticeable or just a slight increase?

Thanks,
Clint

The K&N a lone will not big a big boast in power just a bit maybe a
couple HP differnce so you might feel it you might not if any thing
it would be in the Higher RPM range maybe 5000 and up in all the
Gears .

Good luck getting a substantially measurable increase in performance JUST by changing the breather.

Yes, it is a step, a PART of a performance upgrade - but if it were that simple -

You will enjoy the change in motor music!
