OK,just got back from a 950 km run with the fiat.Last Wed. I had the oil drained out of the tranny and replaced with red line GL-1/4. I had looked in IAP's catalogue and noticed that is what they sell for fiats and early alfas.
I picked up this noise around 650 kms into the trip,It was'nt there when I started yesterday . Not as noticable in 4th as other gears.Sounds like a mechanical rubbing noise, wondering if the throw-out bearing is touching the disk or has the oil change given the tranny something it does'nt like. I do have a slight chatter when starting off,but that could be me as my VW and the wife's Tracker all seem to have a different clutch feel.
Any comments?
Was a blast driving the car along the Hope Princeton, lots of corners and traffic was heavy.. going the other way.
Thanks
Chris

Re: tranny oil/new noise
hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it. Does it change with speed? is it there when coasting in neutral?

Yea, hard without hearing it yourself. I'll try the coasting tomorow, also perhaps if there is a change when cold.
I might take it back and see if the guy can take the bottom pan off and have a look/see if there is shrapnel in the oil.

Re: tranny oil/new noise
Hmmmm, Took it out tonight around the block. noise in all gears but not too much in 4th. In gear and coast with clutch in... very little noise. Coast with car in neutral no noise.Coast in gear, noise. Loudest in 2nd.
Noise is discernible while driving but I know it was not there or as loud last week with the old oil.
Wondering if the tranny guy fiddled with the clutch adjustment and the throw-out bearing is touching(only just) the clutch while car is in gear. If one could imagine what that might sound like, I think it's possible.
Of course if Mark could Star-Trek Transport himself up here, like he did to Florida, I'm sure this could sort itself out in a New York second. ( I have Guiness)

Re: tranny oil/new noise
hmmm, Guiness and BC, what a fabulous combination. If the noise was the release bearing, it should change as you gradually depress the clutch pedal since that changes the load on the bearing. It sounds like it's time to drop the tranny cover and check the oil for metal shavings. In 4th gear, you have direct drive through the main shaft so the counter shaft isn't turning.
