Dash Cap Overlay
Dash Cap Overlay
Does anyone have any experience with these products that azbob*1 sales on ebay? Hard to tell from the ad if it's a decent product or not.

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
It looks the same as the rest. I've used them, but the dash wood never fits right unless you sand it. I would prefer a whole new dash.

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
i have used the dash caps for the lower console and radio console. i have NOT used the upper dash cap.
remember that the cap goes OVER the existing dash, and makes the openings different sizes... fitment of the wood will be an issue that will need to be addressed.
is it worth the cost difference?

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
I've put on loads of them. They don't affect the wood at all. You have to really be patient and take your time fitting the cap to have it look presentable

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
I must be doing something wrong, I've installed two and I removed the entire dash and used many clamps to make sure it fit as tightly as possible and the wood wouldn't fit and the glove box wouldn't work without sanding the edges. The upper console piece was the worst, the chrome trim would in no way fit, I had to remove it and round the edges of the wood. One of my dashes did seem slightly warped.

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
the ones I've installed are only the top cap, not the full face cap

Ahh, maybe that's the way to go if your dash isn't too far gone. Mine were both pretty trashed and I wasn't sure how the seam would look.

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
mark, those that you've done... how does the transition from cap to original piece work? does the transition point tuck in behind the wood?
Re: Dash Cap Overlay
it doesn't reach the wood, just wraps around the front lip of the dash

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
I have done mine with a full dash cap. Mine came from Vick Auto, not ebay, but it looks identical. The instructions make it sound like a 30 minute job, but in reality it took me a few evenings of careful fitting, sanding, and trimming to make it fit the best it could be. The most difficult part is making the vent openings fit better around the vents. In my opinion this makes or breaks it when it comes to making a cap look good. The wood did need to be trimmed. Making a cardboard template of the the openings first makes it easier. Go slow, trim it carefully and you can get it to fit well and look almost as good as a real dash.

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
Does the dash need to be removed to do the installation?

Re: Dash Cap Overlay
If you are asking about the top cap, no. If you are asking about the whole cap, maybe not, but by the time you remove the cluster, glove box etc, there is only four bolts holding the whole dash in and it's much easier to clamp while the glue dries. It's also a good time to re-fit your wood (or aluminum).

htchevyii that dash looks real nice with the aluminum. You did a great job.
