heads up on safety

Post by narfire »

Just a note for some members that are starting out on their fiat experiences.
I have a 80 Fuel injected, when I was attatching the wire clip to the thermo time switch located under the intake manifold, my wedding ring contacted the hot wire on the starter and a ground at the same time. Lotsa spark and a small 2nd deg burn at the ring. Took the ring off before swelling. I did cool by wrapping hand around cold beverage.
Seriously, I shoulda disconected the battery or simpler just take off jewlery before wrenching on the car.
I love to learn from mine and others boo-boos, I use case histories alot while teaching at the fire hall.
Any others that would be usefull like ALWAYS use jack stands with a hyd. jack. Saw one bleed off at a guys shop once.

I know this is a personal issue (between you and the Mrs.), but I only wear my wedding ring during the day (as in when I'm dressed up for work). As soon as I change my clothes at night, I lose the ring and my watch (I don't wear any other jewelry). Between rough housing with the kids and working around the house or on the cars, it is too risky to damage the ring or a nice watch.

Not to digress, but when I work out at the gym a few days each week, I'm always surprised by how many people are wearing their rings and watches. That would really bug me -- getting all sweaty and trying to use excercise equipment while wearing jewelry.

Since Ron does light carpentry work when he's out of town and works on cars when at home, he only wears his wedding ring for our Anniversary dinner. I'm not much of a jewelry freak but I usually put my ring in my pocket before working on my car to keep from scratching the paint and to keep from ruining an expensive piece of jewelry.

I know that I should be more careful but I rarely take my wedding band off. In the 8 years that my wife and I have been married, I have only taken my ring off about 15 times. Every time that I do, I know something is missing and the bright white line where the ring usually is reminds me what it is. Other than that, I only where a watch and that comes off anytime I go to work on the cars.

When I was in the service. There was a guy who was on a ladder changing a light bulb. He slipped and the ring caught on the socket. He made it to the floor but had no skin left on his finger :!:

What the hell are you guys talking about? Don't you know that wedding rings are SUPPOSED to cause serrious injury? They are specifically designed by women to bring you back to the reality as soon as you forget about them. Even for a minute. You really get into doing something and then BAM! You ring gets caught between the starter and the ground and SIZZLE! You weren't think about her. So she zapped you  . You probably didn't have specific permission to be in the garage working on that damn car anyways. you snuck out there and started enjoying yourself and probably opened a beer instead of watching dancing with the stars with her where you were supposed to be  . And remember, no matter how cool your car is, it's still hers! You can fight it all you want but as soon as she decides you have had enough fun, she'll take it away. Maybe not directly. But, indirectly! Bitching at you untill you finally realize that you're just an idiot dumping a lot of $ into something that she only lets you play with anyways. So, what is the moral of this lession? I don't know, My ring finger is starting to fall off and I have to go now!

I lost mine 9 1/2 years ago and haven't had one since, (I've been married for 10 years).

Good point narfire. I would add that at least for us FI car owners, it's not only a safety issue. It's very common to drop a wrench when working on a car. I did, and it dropped (naturally) onto the starter. Because there's a direct unfused 10 gauge wire going from the battery to the dual relay, the short fried my relay. I was careful to disconnect the batter for a major job when I changed out my tranny, but didn't think it would be necessary for a minor job. I was wrong.

mine has been cut off my finger due to an injury that resulted in swelling... welded back together... and still on the same ole finger.

inscription? BWaaahaaa... long gone; fancy engraving on the outside edges too. oh, and it's oval shaped (when did that happen?)

there's grinder marks from the bench grinder on the ring; and if i spit on my knuckle, i can still get it off.

I should have a wedding ring made of elastic. :? I'm on my third marriage. Hopefully this one is the right one. Going great so far! Don't want to jinx myself. :P
