Ignition solutions

Post by Danno »

anybody have a MSD ignition solution on their 2.0 non FI engine? I've never dabbled in anything like that, but I wouldn't be opposed to going that route. Seems like I'll have to be creative to come up with ways to increase the HP on this car. I've seen carb solutions and exhaust solutions but that's about it. I'll be looking into intake systems, working with the ignition and exaust. I'm not gonna make this a race car mind you, just get it running smoothly and better than it did!

what else is out there to make me quicker?

the 79 and 80 carbed 2.0L really benefit from an intake/carb upgrade. Those 2L had a 28/32 carb which is way too small for any performance at all. Just swapping an 1800 intake and carb will provide a substantial increase.
Does your car still have to meet emission standards? If not, get rid of the catalyst and install a free flowing exhaust along with the intake swap. After that, you might consider changing cams. Look for an early differential also, those were 4.30 ratios instead of the 3.9 in your car

excellent info. No, i live in ruralsville nowhere and can do pretty much whatever I want exhaust-wise, so I do plan on getting a nice free flowing exhaust. It's nice to know I can swap out for a better dif too. I haven't seen any mention of performance cams for the 2.0, where do i find these?

With out going to far you can just do the Carb like Mark was talking about
and remove the Cat and mufflers to something a little more free flowing
but not to loud .
Twin IDF's is good for about 20 ponys on a stock engine thats not tons
of cash .
The cheaper way would be a bigger carb that bolts on with out much
work .
Did your car come with a smog pump ? if so take the belt off for a
small gain as for the MSD you might not show much for the trouble
of installing that but is still a improvement but not by much .

For a cheap upgrade there is a module behind the coil on the cooling
fin block thats a GM part that can be found at parts stores all over
Accel for 20 to 30 bucks Mallory and other performance companys
offer them for GM cars I forgot the model number you'll need might
be on the stock module . Some better plugs and wires would help
and coil Accel is the best bang for the buck bottom line .

Don't forget a good air cleaner for that new carb setup hehe ...

Have fun Danno if you do something to the car maybe you could
take some photos for the new site here ?

if you look at the inside of the 2L carbed intake, you'll see runners that a cockroach can barely squeeze through...

Putting a 32ADFA and an 1800 intake on a 2L carbed motor is almost a requirement (unless you need to have all the smog junk on there, in which case, a full FI system can legally be installed)

Never try'd the cockroach pass is this the latest performance test on
intake manifolds ?

Thanks for the advice all, but just an update. My newly rebuilt 32ADFA carb and 1800 intake manifold will be here next week sometime. My "performance" coil and Accell performance ignition module will be here soon too, but I don't know if that's this weekend or next week. I'm gonna get it running with the new carb/intake first before I go messing around with the other stuff, cause knowing me I don't want to mess up the ignition and then try to troubleshoot the entire engine. If I just install this carb then I know where the problem lies!

Weather here is plenty warm, but wayyyyy too wet, so I'm not sure how quickly I'll be able to get this stuff in the Fiat.
