Turn signal allembly
Turn signal allembly
Anyone know if a 76 turn signal assembly and wires will fit and plug into a 79? They look the same. Mine has a broken Hi \ Lo beam lever. Other than that, works as it should - Including the Hi \ Lo beams. Just has a busted lever that only sticks out about a quarter of an inch and does not protrude outside the plastic steering collumn housing.

There are several slight variations of the column switches. Wipers and turn signal levers are wired the same on all regardless. Some switches have a 2 position switch for the high/low beam and some have 3 positions. Then to further complicate matters, there is a difference in the wiring for the 2 position high/low beam switches.
All the wiring will look the same at the white connector blocks, but if you look at the ring on the back of the switch assembily the wires may not be in the same order. Some 2 position switches will not activate the high beams when replaced with a 2 position switch that is wired slightly different.
My 78 has the 3 position high/low beam switch. A friends 78 has the two position switch. Her turn signal cancelation stoped working. Its only a small spring that needs to be replaced, but you have to dissasemble the switch assembily to change it out. I had to give her car back the same day, so I just replaced the whole switch assembily with a spare 2 position switch assembily I had. Her high beams did not work with the new switch assembily. So I just rebuilt her original assembily and then made the change again, now everything works.
You will just have to compare the wiring colors and order on the circular disc on the back of the assembily. Or without removing the one in the car just unhook the connections to the assembily that is on the car and connect your spare assembily. Turn the key on and try everything out. If the High beams don't come on, then there is no need to remove the steering wheel and original switch assembily untill you find the right one.
As a last resort, you could dissasemble both switches and use the high/low beam lever from the 76 and use it when you assemble the 79 unit back together. You have to drill out the aluminum pop rivits on each side of the assembily to dissasemble it.
I recently came up with an idea to do custom levers for the switch. I'm going to cut off the levers so there is just a small stub. Then drill and tap the stub for a threaded hole. Use a lever similar to one of these to screw into the hole: http://www.fibersteel.com/OldSite/Final ... splay8.JPG

Wow man, If you're ever in the Houston area and feel like working on a car just to feel at home, look me up. I do like your idea of the lever though and I think I will take that rout.
