'The Mitty'...the good ,the bad,the ugly

Post by ga.spyder »

This was my first time attending the S.E.'s largest vintage car event.Lots of people,cars,vendors...etc.Literally hundreds of race cars as all paddocks were full, and some guys were in the parking lot.I have never seen so many British cars in my life!! I intentionally parked between a MGB and a Spitwad. You wanna see a Fiat look good, park next to that combo.I had all kinds of people commenting on what a beautiful car the Fiat is.Even some LBC owners.I also wore my ''Call my Fiat a MG,and I'll wop ya'' T-shirt.It was a big hit.
The Good: The racing was great, some historic cars that really brought back some memories.I got to make 10 laps of the finest road course in the country in my car. What a blast, although I was black flagged for passing a Jag in the esses. The guy couldnt drive! He wouldnt have known a apex if it bit him in the ass. They let me back out with a warning.
The Bad: Only a total of 8 Italian cars made the event.2 Spiders,1 coupe,1 X 19,2 Alfas, and 3 Ferraris. The 'I' car corral was overrun by the overflow from the German contingent.Hundreds of LBC's,Porsches,Bimmers,Vdubs,etc... We were outnumbered by Corvairs !!!
The Ugly: The ride home!!I drove through a true Southern 'frog strangler'.It was miserable. You could barely see the road ,which was under a couple inches of water.50 mph wind gusts and lightning thrown in for effect .And me...in my Spider that has never seen a drop of rain, and only had the headlights on once.My top had a persistant drip, right onto my leg.I used a cap to catch it !!I guess the lights were OK.I certainly wasnt gonna get out and check them. Then there are the wipers  ...HAH!! It took 2 seconds to make a sweep of the windshield...on HIGH.Thank God for Rain-X,which I put on heavily before leaving. All in all a very eventful weekend. :D

Craig, get the rainx concentrate that you put in with the pee fluid. Its the best, when you need some clean windshield, just spray the pee-er.

And would the pee fluid go in the bladder under the hood, Pope?

Denise, the orange Rain-X in gallons would stain the bladder so I use the clear concentrate. Although the orange Rain-X is good for writing you name in the snow.

Denise - Sounds like it was a great day, except for the lack of Italian cars and the rain! Speaking of the rain, check my post in Engine and Tuning for a solution to that wiper problem! BTW, I finally got those photos posted in the new members section, but I had some tech help! Keep it revvin'!

Craig,
I hope you enjoyed your first "Mitty". Wish I could have made it Friday or Saturday - but my schedule didn't allow it. Also wish you could have made it back for Sunday. It was a beautifual day with some great racing. One of the old F1 cars was actually cranking out 1:14's!!!!! On Saturday, you probably met one of my friends at the car corral, he was there in the red 308 Ferrari. On Sunday he drove a 93 RX7 that he dropped an LS1 Vette motor in - now that an interesting car - set up to be his "track" car. There were only 2 or 3 Italian cars there Sunday (all Alfa's).
Took my son for his very first race experience and I know he'll never forget it. He loved it! Looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree. We were over in turn 10 when a Vette went up in flames right in front of us - I know he'll remember that forever.
We will have to plan on meeting up for it next year - my Spider will definitely be finished by then!!!!

Kevin, sorry I missed you and your son. After my adventure on Sat,I decided to let the car dry out and skipped Sun.That Tyrell F1 car as ungodly fast, and was the best sounding car on the tack. That howl would send shivers down your spine!!I did meet the 308 guys on Sat.,nice fellows.I had met George at I.C.D.,but had never seen his car.Gonna have the car for Dixie Fiatfest in June? If not ,come anyway! I need a navigator for the Sat. rally. Can your son read a map? :D

Please do come up! You don't have to read no silly maps....and a GPS will only slow you down.
Dang, wish Alvon could come for the Fiatfest. The rally route is absolutely awesome!
