Rumble in rear

Post by ppo »

I get a rumble in my rear. (I know that doesn't sound good) It's only when I pull out quickly in first. I have a '80 spider 2000. Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

There are a few things to look at that could cause noise in the rear. One is the differential. Check oil, next check carrier bearings, next check axle bearings for wear. Other things are brakes grinding. There is not much else back there. good luck. Emo.

Thanks. I know the oil's good. Any one of those stand out as being something that would only happen during a quick acceleration from standing still?

I would carefully inspect the U-joints as well. I had one cup that dried up on me.

A worn Guibo (flex disc, donut) can shudder when placed under heavy load, such as briskly departing from a stop. Rule this out before tearing into the diff. or U-joint.

A little further back from the flex disc is the driveshaft carrier bearing which is housed in a rubber pillow block. The rubber pillow block is prone to deterioration and the driveshaft can wobble.

besides the driveshaft support, inspect the upper rear end locating bars. If the bushings are worn the rear end twists under load and puts the ujoints at a severe angle

See, I knew that didn't sound good when I first said it. Seriously though, thanks for all the tips, and when I get my car back from getting painted, I will check those things out. I am learning a lot here, including what happens to Jazgeek when he has chili for lunch.

It could be the exhaust rubbing against the floor pan.
