Thunbs up: Whoa! Brakes.

Post by Kevin1 »

Nearly a year after buying a set of Whoa! Brakes from Jon Logan at last year's FFO, they are finally installed in the spider. Everything bolted right up and fit nicely with no installation surprises along the way. If It weren't for the fact that the new parts looked so nice compared to what came out, you couldn't tell they weren't OEM from the way it all fit tigether. Nicely done! Unlike other brakes I've known, these required careful bedding in after installation. That was an interesting experience - the more they were bedded in, the better they got! I went from somewhat skeptical to to completely sold on the bedding in idea in about 15 minutes.
Before the so-so stock brakes in our car were the limiting factor when it came to stopping. Now, the new brakes will do whatever you ask of them, and it is the tires' grip that limits the stops. Just as it should be. This is easily one of the best upgrades we've made to the car.

They are an awesome setup. I've got them on my 72 and was impressed at how easy they were to install.
Mike, 9 months on the shelf ain't too bad. I still have the 14" set I won at the 2005 FFO sitting in their box.

It was a busy winter, Mike!
These brakes were supposed to be my big Fiat project this winter, along with a bunch of other smaller, cosmetic stuff. Then the Healey dropped an exhaust valve and BOOM! That went straight to the top of the critical list. One unexpected new motor later and I was finally ready to install the brakes. That's ok, the driving season here is just getting started. And both the Healey and Fiat are running great.
Denise, the kit I installed was the 14" one. All you have to do to upgrade from the 13" kit is install the extra caliper spacers, longer bolts, and the new rotors. (assuming you have 14" wheels on the car).
I bet it would only take about 9 months.

Jon tells me that the cromadora wheels i am expecting to use (same as what he is using) will work with the larger rotor. so even though i have 13" rims, the larger setup will require only a minor amount of modification on my part.... which makes me smile.

never ever have been impressed with the stock brakes, looking forward to this modification.

I have a template that is used to determine which 13" wheel can be used with the 14" Whoa brake kit. I'll have to see if my Cromadoras can be used. The newer 14" wheels just don't look right on an early model Spider in my opinion.

I have the Cromadora cross. same as Logan's on his car. he uses the larger brake kit. i expect to remove about .002" from the inside of the rims, and shave a corner of the caliper slightly in order to get my wheels to fit; according to Jon's report.

I know that Fierst did some extensive studies on fitment of various 13" rims; and i bet Logan has that list of what will and what won't work.

Denise,
If you want to clear up some shelf space, I'd be happy to buy the 14 inch kit from you. Was planning to order the kit from Midwest 124 in the very near future, but if you need some $ for other items/projects I'd be happy to buy your unused kit from you. Could also talk a potential partial trade - I ordered a set of 15 inch Mini-lite style wheels(that should arrive today), so I will be trying to sell my 14 inch BWA alloys with brand new(less than 600 miles on them) Pirelli tires. I like the way these wheels look on my early model - just wanted the upgrade to a 15 inch wheel/tire package.
