modern fan for the radiator

Post by spiderrey »

i just removed the heavy non efficient stock fan from my 70 spider. i modified the stock fan mount slightly so that if would hold a new spal fan. the fan almost fits in the mount perfectly. the car lost 3 lbs 6 ozs with the new fan and pulls more air using less power. there is also more room between the fan and the motor since the fan fits completely inside the shroud, and the shrouud is now about 3/4 of an inch thinner.
im also installing the adjustable cam pullys onto the car. they have been sitting on my desk for over a year.

I replaced the bulky and akwardly mounted stock electric fan and am happy with the look and room, but think I should have used a larger or higher flow fan, I bought a 14" cheapie on Ebay. I don't think the fan I used pulls as much air as the stock one, but I never drove it with the stock one so I don't really know. If using a relay doesn't make it move more air I'll have to buy a bigger or better one. I made mounts out of stainless and it was a p.i.t.a.

its the same diamiter as the stock one. fit right in the shroud. i actually have two, and they came with a harness and a controller that makes them adjustable. but i only mounted the one, should be all i need since the stock one cooled well enough even with my modified setup. itll be wired in the same as the stock one was.
trey, what brand is yours. it looks like it has mounts like mine. is it a spal?

if your Spal is the same diameter, but thinner, the blades won't move as much air

Mine's a Zirgo 14". I used the stock wiring too. I never drove the car with the stock fan, but when I hooked both to a battery to test them, the stock one seemed to have more blade pitch and pull more air. The car runs really cool and the fan rarely comes on around here, but if I idle very long in hot weather the temp starts creeping up. I could have fit a 16" and maybe should have.

Does anybody know what the CFM rating on the original fans is?

It is under a 1000 CFM and probably around 850-900. It uses 110 watts to operate the fan. It is an 11" 4-bladed fan.

Watts up! Sorry for the slip up. LOL, you probably thought I had one of those power converters on board.

110 watts or about 9 amps.

Great catch Dave.

800-950 CFM, I was asking because I was thinking about changing out my fan for a lower amp higher volume fan I saw the below listed fans on the net but do not know for sure if they are the same fan. It seems the Blu Cooling fan would not be higher cfm with a lower price, but I am not going to try to tell them how to price things.
I really think a 10" fan should do the work and provide the quiet and possibly reduce the energy work load.

Zirgo 14" 2122cfm Radiator Cooling Fan $89.00 -
14 Zirgo 2175cfm High Performance Blu Cooling Fan $69.50 -

The newer fans are completely different in their design than the original Fiat fan. Many have 6-10 blades instead of four, and they spin at 2000 - 3000 rpm. As a result they can move a lot more air while fitting in the same diameter.

Several choices are available at Jegs:

Hey POPE, you did post it as 110Watts not volts, that would be about 9 amps. watts/volts= amps

Don't you hate it when you make a mistake, but find out your mistake is that you didn't make a mistake!
