ECU question

Post by pjnats »

Hey, everyone! I'm having problems with my ECU. I took my "82 Spider to a mechanic for re-occuring idle issues, and he finally concluded that the ECU was bad. I borrowed my brother's ECU (he recently purchased his own "82) and it cleared up most of the issues. I then took mine to a local electronic specialist who tested mine and concluded that there was really nothing wrong with it. When I put my ECU back in, however, all the old problems re-surfaced. I also noticed when I returned my brother's ECU that his parts number was slightly different. My number is 0280000190 and my brother's is 0280000207. Can anyone tell me which of these is the right part for an '82 Spider, or are they interchangeable? I know on the surface the answer is obvious, but my car has run on my ECU without the problems that now exist. Thanks for your help!

those are the Bosch numbers, not the part #s that Fiat used. But I can tell you that the Fiat parts book lists 3 different ecu's;
4429200 for 1980
5934557 for 81-82
5997042 for 84-85
I've swapped them in the past and haven't had any trouble. The unit for an X1/9 looks the same but has a different part number
Fiat ecu's normally don't have many problems, the only bad units I've seen have been completely dead, but that doesn't mean yours isn't the problem
