Really embarrassed about this one

Post by katsi »

First off, thanks So, cal Mike for the infor about the brakes. But, I got a really dumb question I need an answer to. I have never owned a unibody car befor and I was wondering, where do I put the jacks in the front of the car? I put the rear jacks under the axle like I ushuall do but, no front axle here. Where is a good location? I don't really think I want to tweak on the crossmember as the car is so old. It's not rusted but, who knows, it might be and I really don't want it comming down on my head. Can I use those bars that go down the side right behing the front fender wells about 12" in? Anyway, I know you guys jack your up so where do you put the jacks in the front? Do you use a block of wood?

Sorry, I hope the questions will get less dumb as time goes by.

Thanks
Katsi

No worries, any question is a good one. The Fiat has front jack points just behind the wheel well and below the rocker panel. You should see two raised ribs about 3 inches apart. The jack I believe is supposed to fit there. Same with the rear but forward of the wheel well.
Have fun.

I usually jack from the center of the cross member to lift the whole front end, and use a block of wood to spread the load. Then I put jack stands out at the ends of the cross member. You can jack from anywhere along the cross member, and it's always a good idea to use a block of wood. If just lifting one wheel, I'll jack under the lower control arm for that side.

depending on the project, i will use either the reinforced jack points under the side of the car (behind front wheels or in front of rear wheels) or i will use the rear axle and the front cross member.

if you use the rear axle, of course be careful of the brake lines.
