Calling all 5 speeders

Post by Baz »

In the middle of my 5 speed conversion. What I need to do is run the clutch cable thru the bulk head, but I am unable to understand how this is done or where it is located. Can anyone give me a pic of where it comes thru the bulkhead and how it is fastened to the bulkhead. None of my manuals show this.

Thanks men.

Hey Baz, hope my picture helps. If you look between the brake booster and the brake reservoir, you'll see where the cable goes into the firewall. It would be adviseable to install an extra reinforcement plate to the firewall where the cable will go through since these cars have been known to have a firewall flexing problem, especially if the cable is used as an engine ground.

Here is a bulkhead shot inside the engine bay for a '70 spider. The clutch cable is the one centered above the brake booster.

BAz,

RHD right ?

Clutch cable goes through the firewall approxiately 9-10 inches in from the inner guard and about 1-1.5 inches from the firewall top rail, about where the stamped VIN number starts, cable then runs forward and loops around the front on the motor crossing the T piece, then down the side of the block, under the intake manifold to the clutch fork.

You will need to re-enforce the firewall with a small plate.

This might help if you're doing RHD.

The hole for the clutch cable is just under the box section cross member. It's the one with the raised lip around it and almost directly above the large hole where the brake servo/master cylinder fits. As Adrian said, make sure you reinforce it well, the firewall will always crack around the clutch hole otherwise.

In this shot you can follow where it goes from the firewall (the black cable just to the right of the distributor), around the front of the engine and then down under the carbys, ending up going through a hole in the bell housing.
