Getting ready for Rotisserie
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Its simply amazing how little these cars weigh when fully stripped. You can literally pick one end up! I used 2 inch square stock for my 61. And ran bracing across the door openings.
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Tomorrow I'm going back to the store to get some steel that looks like a "U". I don't want to cut off what I have on the braces. I'll just weld it to the solid stock and to the arms. I don't know why I made this hard on myself. I'll send a pic when I'm done.
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Well I made the braces to go on the solid stock and wrap around the arms for the rotisserie so it wouldn't twist. I bought new welding wire. It was .030" wire to use with the gas. After welding a bit realized the welds weren't holding. Never the less, I'm determined. So I keep welding. After putting in most of the day. It isn't going the way I wanted it to. After pulling my hair out. I decided to go over everything. It figures that the polarity of the welder had to be in a certain position to weld with certain wires. Of course it in the other direction. I don't know but hopefully this is the only issue holding me back. Can anyone explain to me the difference between to two polarity positions?
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Id have to find the instructions that came with my MIG. But I think its related to welding without gas for cast iron. You need practice, and thats exactly where I first used mine
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
I went out and bought some flux core wire and used that with the mig welder. It solved the problem with the welding. Finally the welds are holding. Hopefully I'll get the welding done today and I'll give pic's. I did add square stock to what I had. I think its going to be fine. It doesn't seem to be twisting at all.
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Look on the inside of the cabinet, it should tell you the polarity for the wire you are using. Rosin core is not really what you want. Its OK to practice, but at some time you will want to gas weld because it leaves no slag. Weld with 80/20 mix of gas and the correct polarity. If the weld is not sticking, the surfaces are not clean and/or the setting on the MIG is too low. Keep you wirespeed around 4.5 to 5 out of 10 and 2/3rd of top amp setting for thick tubing. Welding should sound like bacon frying, a constant sizzle, not spitting.
Make sure you are melting the metal of the tube, not just melting the wire. You dont want it to look like solder.
Good luck

Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Thanks guys! I'll use the gas and the other wire to weld on the car. I got the Rotisserie done. It was because of the polarity that the welds were sticking. I did have the metal grinded clean and the voltage on 4 which is the highest setting on this Mig. Your right I was sizzling like bacon. LOL Here are some pics
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Look at what the muffler had done to the emergency brake cable. Who ever ran the cable didn't think about the muffler.
It was almost cut all the was through. Check your cables!

Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Boy I thought I would have gotten more done today. All I got done was one wheel. and the steering box. I had to cut one of the joints out. All it did was spin. I'm need to buy the spring compressors to get the springs off/on easier. Unless someone has an easy way to take them off/on. I can't do anything else until I done playing my billiard tournaments this weekend. Wish me luck. $5000. is first place. Here's a pic.
Re: Getting ready for Rotisserie
Well, I got knocked out of the tournament. The good news is I got the spring compressors and I'm back to work taking the three other wheels off tomorrow. Hopefully all three.

Oh, believe me. I'm bummed! But I look forward to the next time. I gotta keep my head up.
