spinning shift knob

the shift knob on my 83 spins freely. is this correct? also will the aftermarket wooden shift knobs available from spiderpoint and others spin as well? thaks greg

it's usually the upper chrome extension that spins, not the shift knob. New rubber bushings should reduce the amount of spinning and looseness

Thanks Mark, my chrome lever is secure and not spinning. just the knob. I have actually come to prefer the feeling of the knob. was hoping the anwser was "yeah theey are all like that" oh well

What kind of knob do you have? If threaded, perhaps the threads are stripped. If not the threaded type, there may be some tiny set screws on it somewhere to tighten its attachment. Keep in mind that if it is the second type and the set screw is tightened it could bugger up the threads on the end of the chrome extension so that it won't accept a threaded knob in the future.

BTW, all the standard knobs were threaded. I've seen aftermarket knobs that use the set screw attachment method.

Put some Teflon tape on the threads before you screw the knob on.

Personally I am not bothered by the spinning nob.

I doubt I will replace it, unless I get a major itch to turn a new one on the lathe... and that could only happen if I have fully committed to dash wood upgrade, e-brake handle, and inner door handles all being carved out of wood. It would all be the same wood.

Until then, this is in my opinion for me a non-concern.

There are so many things that really need my time and money on my otherwise wonderful car, that the niggly bits are constructively ignored.

if you choose to look for a replacement threaded knob, look for 10mm x 1.25 threads.

All kidding aside, I could do it, but it'd have to wait until (if) I retire, and it could be done as a hobby.
A problem I see is that there are so many wood and color choices to be made, it would be hard to get those decisions made long distance. Wood and grains are easy enough, but it's hard to get true color on the computer.
