ventura ace wrote: Steve, one thing we didn't get a chance to do, but is a good idea before you go any further is to put oil into the engine and turn the aux shaft to verify that the oil pump is pumping oil up to the cam towers. You may want to wait to do this until the day you are ready to put the engine back into the car. Here's what you do:
1) Install oil filter pedestal and oil filter, making sure that the oil filter is filled with new oil
2) With cam covers still off, fill the engine with oil (4 quarts total, including what you put in filter). You can put some of the oil in the top of each cam tower to get a good pool of oil around all the valve shims, springs, etc. All the excess oil will drain down into the oil pan as you do this.
3) With engine positioned at TDC, and cam pointers on their marks, remove the timing belt just enough to be able to turn the aux shaft pulley freely. With belt off, do not move the cranshaft or cam shafts until the belt is back on -- do not want to bend any valves!
4) Spin the aux shaft pulley clockwise by hand continuously until you see oil sqirting out through the ports in the center and ends of each camshaft. After verifying that oil is reaching the cams, you are ready to button thngs back up.
5) Reinstall the timing belt, making sure you are at TDC and cam pointers are dead on. Aux shaft pointer should be at approx 1:00 position (this is very important).
Ace,

Trying to get this done today, and I need a little clarification.

First, how do I know if I'm at TDC? It seems like we were using the mark on the back of the flywheel which, as you can see in this picture is now just a little left of center. The cam pulleys are on their marks (second picture below) with the flywheel in this position.

Also, just want to be sure that I am turning the right shaft. In the pic below, this is what I am assuming is the aux shaft pulley, and what you mean by the mark being at 1:00.

Thanks!

Tappy - Looking forward to getting hold of a timing belt cover next weekend!

All - after a bit of coaxing, and a call to Ace, I managed to pump oil successfully though my engine. Seeing the slippy stuff oozing out the ports in the cam towers brought joy to my heart! So the last parts are going back on over the next couple of days. Hope to have pics of the completed engine by mid week, and the sucka is goin' back in one week from today!

if the crankshaft pulley isn't tight yet, slide it off. The crankshaft sprocket has an index line on it that will match up with a casting on the front seal housing indicating tdc.

Thanks - I was just havin' some fun with ya. I knew you would read the post and know that I was taking a poke at you. I went with the reconfigured setup with the smog pump moved down and the alternator on the other side.

BTW - I did get your voicemail on Saturday. I was a my sons' school's jogathon until mid afternoon and only did a couple of hours on the engine later that afternoon, and then another couple of hours this afternoon. I think with an hour or two each evening this week I'll be more than ready to get it in the car on Sunday.

- - - - - - - The Engine Is Done! - - - - - - -

Well, basically done anyway. I still have to button a couple of things up - put a gasket on the carb, put the radiator T on the front, torque up a couple of nuts and bolts, put on a couple of belts. But those are really just details. This baby is ready to go in the car.

So who can come on Sunday. Ryan said he'd be here, and I'd love to get it all done in time to take a drive up Glendora Mountain Road when we're done. Let me know.

Good job, Steve! I'm fairly certain I can get there on Sunday.

You could go ahead and put the V-belts on (to make sure everything fits). Do you still need to check the Steering fluid? I'll bring a socket to remove the plug -- you should get some 90W oil (you may need some for the differential anyway).

I should be there. I'd be 100%, but because I've been working and staying away from home all week, I have to sweet talk my honey into doing without me on the weekend too. Shouldn't be a problem, doing without me around the house is a pleasure. :D

Yes, I still need to check the steering fluid, so it'll be great if you can bring the socket, and I'll bring the oil.

Can I just buy generic V-belts at Kragen? If so, how do I know what kind to get? I have one belt that I originally bought for the smog pump on the old engine, but with the alternate configuration on the new engine, it doesn't fit anywhere.

Thanks Ace!

Don't want you to get in trouble with the boss, but you're always welcome around my house. I'm pretty sure I have some yard work that needs to be done...
