Caliper Replacement Question
I've got to replace one of my front calipers that is hanging up. Would you do both at the same time?

Re: Caliper Replacement Question
I don't know about replacing both calipers but I would definitely look into replacing both rotors and the pads. Is the other caliper showing any signs of giving up the ghost?

Re: Caliper Replacement Question
Hey Denise,
No, the other caliper is still stopping the car albeit pulling it to the left. I just thought that if one was crap the other might be on the way. Calipers have gotten pretty inexpensive and rotors are a snap to replace as well. My biggest issue is always getting the flex line off of the rigid line. Last time I broke the rigid line and had to have one made. Grrrrr.....

Re: Caliper Replacement Question
Scott, my 71 had a failed left front caliper and I replaced it with a used caliper Alvon sent me. I've never had an issue.

Re: Caliper Replacement Question
Scott,
I have just spent a frustrating week with calipers, albeit rears. My pull was absolutely coming from the rear.Pulled apart and waited for parts.Went to rebuild the calipers and found damaged internals!Had to order new ones, wish I had done that to begin with.If you are going to rebuild them, take them completely apart before ordering the kit, to make sure they are worth rebuilding.I only had 1 bad caliper, but I couldnt see using a 27 year old(questionable) part on one side, and a new one on the other, when I was trying to eliminate uneven braking!!
good luck,Craig

Re: Caliper Replacement Question
I don't like to take chances when it comes to brakes, every part on the '82 was replaced, except some hard lines and the booster. Remans are pretty cheap thru the chain stores, although I scored some new fronts pretty cheap on Ebay. There are also some good deals on hose kits on Ebay. Of course that car is my Wives, so I am much more anal about it than the ones I drive.
I rebuilt the fronts on my '71 to save a few bucks and it took four calipers to make two good ones. On one of them I never did get the piston out and some of the others were pitted/rusty. I don't think it's even worth messing with the rears, as it sounds like they can be a p.i.t.a.
