Engine Swap Questions and Progress (was "Rebirth!")
Re: Engine Swap Questions and Progress (was "Rebirth!")
while the engine is out, I'd remove the small square plug on top of the steering gear and check the oil level in it. So much easier while the engine is out. Don't forget to reroute the alternator harness to the left side.

Re: Engine Swap Questions and Progress (was "Rebirth!")
Got a lot more stuff off the engine today with Reyy's help. I have quite a bit of cleaning to do, and then painting, and then have to get a lot of stuff put back together to be ready for Saturday.
I'm still trying to figure out what I use to seal the studs on the exhaust manifold.
Thanks,

Steve, I'll bring a tube of High Temp Teflon Paste for the exhaust studs.

steve, i got the broken stud out of the exhaust manifold. most of the 2nd batch of parts is clean.
i blasted the valve covers with walnut shell, they are still ugly and will need paint. the intake came out pretty good i think.

Rey,
you straight up rock man!
I hope you are there on Saturday. You are one of my Fiat hero's.
Maybe we can have a "block party" on your '70, and finally get some paint on that race car! lol

That's great! Thanks. I should be home early afternoon tomorrow, and most of the day Friday. At some point on Friday I am going to go out to Mark's to pick up the gaskets.spiderrey wrote:steve, i got the broken stud out of the exhaust manifold. most of the 2nd batch of parts is clean.

I'll pick up some paint for the covers. A nice orange ought to do.

Re: Engine Swap Questions and Progress (was "Rebirth!")
Everything is now taken apart as far as I am going to take it apart. The cleaning is done for the most part, and I'm ready to paint. Most of the parts that Reyy is sandblasting for me are done, with a few left to pick up tomorrow.
I have one day left to get ready, and here's what I think I have left to do:
One thing I noticed when I got the head off today is that the cylinder heads are covered with black, somewhat flakey, carbony looking stuff. Should I do anything about that? Reyy suggested putting some ATF in the cylinders as I put it back together - if I do that, how much?
My hope is that by the end of the day tomorrow, I am far enough along to make Saturday as uncomplicated as possible.
Here are some pics I took this afternoon.

- Check the oil in the steering box
- Buy misc supplies like coolant, oil
- Clean up and get organized

keep the buckets and shims in the same positions as they were when the head was assembled-it will make the valve adjustment much quicker

The only thing I can think of that you've missed on your list is perhaps the most important. Get the steaks.

Reyy said the same thing. Fortunately I had not moved any of them around, so that's in good shape. So Cal Mark wrote:keep the buckets and shims in the same positions as they were when the head was assembled-it will make the valve adjustment much quicker

Goodness, you've made great progress! Looks like there will be nothing left to do on Saturday!
Be sure to check with Mark about his recommendations for gasket sealer on any of the gaskets that you will be replacing, and add that to your shopping list.

parts are all as clean as they are gonna get. u can get them anytime steve.. and your gonna need some assemble lube for the head..
also tools will be needed to help the work flow better. ill have a torque wrench, maybe alvon might have one too, just in case.
ill have a compressor in the back of my truck along with a honda high pressure washer if needed, ive seen that engine bay. i think its a distant cousin to the ol exxon valdez. lol
this ought to be something..
