OK question. wondering if this will work . I have a 2 L fi engine block. I am wanting to putter about and build another engine. I'm in the process of putting in oversize valves in a 1800 head with appropriate porting, 10 thou comming off the head.. Also have a local lead on 40/80 cams and headers for the engine. I have shaved the flywheel down 3-4 pounds as well. I was wanting a bit more midrange torque. As nice as it is to live with the vinyards about, there are no shortage of wankers puttering 10-20 kms/hr below the speed limit, I have to go to work.
Will this setup be drivable or am I going to start needing(spending) more with the FI engine.
Anyone out there with a slightly/or more so, modified 2 L engine. Will there be enough airflow?
Comments?
Thanks
Chris

Re: FI improvements ?
what intake system are you using? If it's stock FI, that is too much cam. You need a programmable system if you want to use those cams. In my opinion, the 40-80 cams aren't that good for mid-range. What rpm range do you plan to operate in?

Re: FI improvements ?
I have a stock FI system/"normal" intake( normal is really just a setting on a dryer). I do have a 34 adf new sitting in a box ( $500 cdn) with an older intake manifold (100$ cdn ) and a carb throttle linkage from a 79 parts car, but I do like the smoothness and realiability of the FI system. I don't have any intention to race the car but for the most part, just was wanting or see if I could get a bit more mid-range punch. RPM range I found myself driving in last year was 2800-4800. Perhaps I should stick to the stock cams and hope the 1800 head & valves will help with the lightened flywheel. I'll try the headers but I suppose I can take them of and go stock as well. I was going to put a flange on a downpipe where it goes from two into one and then run a 2" pipe back to the muffler. (no smog here)
I'm going to run the car a bit with the current engine as I did the valve clearances this winter, want to put a clean trap on though.
I love the car but I don't want to make the thing run rough, issues with fuel delivery etc. I was hoping to make a couple of longer trips 700-1500 kms this summer.
Any comment are very appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

Re: FI improvements ?
We've been developing a new cam profile to work with the stock FI system. I should have all of the specs within a week. The rpm range you mostly drive in is too low really for the 40-80 cams. You need cams that develop torque, which means shorter duration and more lift

Re: FI improvements ?
OK got it ,....I think. I called a vendor back east who sell the 40/80 cams and although they advertise they can be used with the FI engine he does not recomend them either without aftermarket fuel system. So,I will stick to stock cams.he suggested dialing them in or making sure the timing marks are accurate. Also the headers will help as will the 1800 head and lightened flywheel.
Thinking of selling the new 34 adf I have, but never know if my next fiat will be a carb'd car.
I'll stay in touch if the cams you are working on come available.
Thanks
Chris

Re: FI improvements ?
I'll have the new cam profile info within a week. A good no-back pressure exhaust and header will help with the overlap situation, but it's still too much for the stock FI to run the 40-80 cams. My street perf cams are about the longest duration cams you can use without a programmable system
