Another bumper question

Post by Baz »

Can anyone tell me if there is some sort of filler that is available to fill the chips I have on the rubber outer wings of the twin tube unit. There does not appear to be anything available here in Australia. Failing that, does anyone have a couple of good units I can buy ?

Baz,

Depends upon how big the chips are. I'm sure some type of black liquid rubber or silicone sealant would work, but the important thing would be to get the repair to stick. You will need to abrade the surface of the chip so the repair material can mechanically adhere. You could remove some rubber from the back of one in a non visible spot and try to melt it and pour it into the area. I guess a double boiler would safely melt the rubber without burning it. If those don't work successfully then I have a several sets, those things are heavy though.

How is your auto to manual conversion going?

Probably the option that would work best would be to cut out the chip so that it is a square hole, then cut out a square plug from another area and use rubber cement to glue it in. If it sticks up too high, cut or sand it down, then use a torch or lighter and lightly melt the surface to bring back the sheen.

Hi Matt, yes, the conversion is under way, I have just fitted pedals and mounted a plate and tube in the bulkhead for the cable to pass through. Motor overhauled and painted, body stripped and ready for soda blasting, upholstery done., bumpers work in progress. Thanks to you, gearbox and drive train ready to bolt up. Those rubber fins that you have. Could you ring the P.O. and ask how much the freight to Ozzie would be ? It may be that it is less trouble and time to get good ones sent from you than try to fix the existing ones.

Thanks
Baz

i'm all for conservation, but wouldn't just buying a decent set be more practical and less time consuming?

Baz,

I still have your email and sending address. Do you need the front or rear bumper ends?
