Tail lights don't quite fit

Post by 124spiderman »

I bought some 2nd hand rear tail light clusters on Ebay a little while ago. I was told they were from a '76/'77 model, I have a 74 so I guess they are the same?
Well they don't quite fit that well. There seems to be a half inch gap on the ends and don't sit flush against the body. can anyone tell me if there were different rear lights? I know the 79-80's were a completely differnt shape?
I should mention I know there is a rare type that briefly appeared that were 2 piece, but mine are three piece. (ie Amber indicator, red stop and clear reverse lense).

I think your '74 lenses are interchangable with many other "early" years, regardless of whether they use amber or red turn signals. But I seem to remember that one Spider vintage has the lamp housing different than either the "old" or "new" style, and I think the orphan was 1974.

71/72 was the orphan years. They are longer than 70 or 73-78.

Is that '70 the "ramblin' wreck" from Georgia Tech we hear about?

Spiderman,

Could it be that you are missing the rubber gasket that goes between the housing and the body? It is about 1/2" thick.

Spiderman,
If you find that you do indeed have a set of the orphan years ('71 -'72) as Denise pointed out and can't use them on your '74, I'm in the market for a pair if they're in good condition (chrome is okay).
